Hello-

I am  very new to this and was looking for advice. I apologise as I am sure people here are asked this all of the time, but - my mom gave me a Thelonious Monk album that she had autographed years ago. It is in pen and he is in flying gear on the cover. How do I begin to know how much to ask for this? (She needs to sell it)

Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Erika

Hi Erika,

Congrats, if real, you have a gem. And if your mom got it IP, then you know its good. Monk signatures are not common at all really, and they command high prices. Its a strange thing, just the other day their were 2 Monk signed LPs on ebay from different sellers. Thats the first time i have ever seen that, but have my reservations that they were real. Because a legit Monk album would be quite rare, and neither item went above 300 dollars.

What i would do is to contact RR Auction and see about consigning the item. I quickly reviewed their past auction sales, and just for a picture, a legit Monk autograph goes for several thousand dollars. And a signed album would likely bring much more depending on condition. I would not go the ebay route for one big reason, and that is b/c its such a high value item, and i doubt you would get even half the value out of it that you would get by consigning it. RR Auction commands high prices, and the buyers often have very deep pockets, and the auctions are watched by people all over the world. You have to be a member their to look at their past auctions, but you might want to sign up *free of course* and look at the past Monk items. Their are only 3 or 4 in the last 5 or 6 years, and the prices were in the thousands. If your item looks better than those sigs, then you know youve got a winner, and an album will command a higher price as well. But i would email them to see about consigning it, they would be interested for sure.

I hope this helps you out. If i had to guess based on figures i have seen before from RR Auction and other high profile auctions, i would guess it could bring in 2 to 4 thousand, and maybe even higher depending on condition, where its signed, the boldness of the signature etc. It would be a very rare find and i think bidders would go hard at it. Good luck Erika, i hope you get alot!

Hello-

Thank you for responding. I just found this in my SPAM folder - I assumed nobody answered!

That is good to know - I have never had anything in my whole life autographed, so I don't know anything about it. My mom just figured she didn't do anything with it but have it in a box - so we might as well sell it. It could certainly be wonderful to get some  money for it.

I will contact RR Auction as you suggested. I will keep you posted.

Thank you for taking the time to respond :-) I appreciate it.

Erika

No problem Erika,

I am sure RR will be anxious to sell it. Monk signatures go for high prices. I would expect easily over a thousand dollars, and probably quite a bit more.

Good luck

Carl

Also check out Heritage in Dallas - their last auction commanded enormous prices and they have wide reach. Like us.

Thank you Bill - I will do that. I appreciate your input :-)
