Hi, Gang,

Do you think this Johnny Cash signed card is authentic?

Thanks,

I am not an expert at all, but I think it looks good.

Thanks Gordon...I'm beginning to  lean that way as well.  I just contacted Roger Epperson so we'll see what he says.

Just heard back from Roger Epperson, and $15.00 later, he says its a secretarial.  Am I frustrated?  You betcha.

I hate the fact of people charging for online opinions. You have been pulled around enough.

Okay, so Roger says that it is secretarial which means that he may have information regarding the origin of the auto.  Did he give you an explanation as to why?

I got no explanation, just a quick, "Sorry it's a secretarial," sent from his Blackberry.  Boy, when he says, "Quick opinion," he means it, doesn't he?  :)

Well if you can afford it buy the signed check from his site, seems they are the only thing everyone to really sign! I do not know how rare they are but I have never seen one in the open market before!

..and isn't it funny that the signature on that check looks so different from so many other things he's signed?  And sadly, that check isn't super appealing in displayable terms (to me at least--I prefer a photo of some sort).   I know that something is bound to come along, so I'll just bide my time and if I can't find anything legitimate, maybe I'll just buy a super-cool canvas print and forget the autograph altogether.

I've got to disagree with Brandon. I think quick opinion tests have saved people a lot of money. When they're not very familiar autograph collectors themselves, a second opinion by an expert can be very valuable. I know that both Roger Epperson's service and PSA's service take it very seriously. They don't want to give the ok on an item that they later get in person and can't authenticate at that point.

I'm not a big fan of checks. People like them, I suppose for the authenticity certain quality. Didn't JFK have a secretary sign his checks? Others could have as well.

There'll be a lot of good, genuine material in your price range out there over the next month or so if you keep at it.

If Roger says that this is a secretarial, then I would probably not buy it.  However, if this signature was on an LP, CD or photo, I would probably say go for it.  I still like the signature itself, but this is a card and my guess is that Roger knows the origin of the card, so he is 100% positive who signed it.  It would be nice to hear a little more from him as to his reasoning, but my guess is that would cost you more.

In addition, I am on the fence about charging for online opinions.  Like Brandon, I am not a big fan of the practice but Brick is right, there are obvious forgeries out there and Roger has saved people a lot of money.

RR Auction has two albums this month that you may be able to get at a decent price.  Right now they are at $110.00 each and the auction ends Wednesday.  However, I did notice that neither one has been certified by Roger but they are certified by RR Auction.  Whether that means anything, I have no idea.

Roger's number is right on his website. I'm sure he'd be willing to discuss his authenticity opinion on the piece if asked.

RR never has their Johnny Cash items pre-certified by a third party. I'm not sure why when they do for what seems like 90 or 95% of everything else.  I think the Johnny Cash albums have a history of ending closer to $300+ than $200.
