Recently I was fortunate to get one of the original signed Bag One lithos with genuine COA that had 3D stamp, "100% cotton", etc. It reads "Each print was hand signed and numbered by John Lennon". My question is not about the signature, but about the numbering.

I did a study of the handwriting as seen on different editions of the same lithograph (see the attached image) and it seems there were several people involved to number these. Are there any accounts who did the numbering? I find it hard to imagine John doing all that alone as he had just two days (according to Anthony Fawcett's book). And it takes more time to number a lithograph than to sign it.

Unless someone has anecdotal evidence of the event you are never going to know the answer to this. Maybe Lennon did a few, got fed up and left the rest to the printer or someone else. It does not matter - it will not affect the value in any way.

Super piece, congratulations.

Thank you! That was a real challenge with postage…

Sure it doesn’t affect the value, but having some extra writing done by John’s hand is a nice bonus :)

to me, the “78”, “89” and “90” editions look like John.

btw, my lithograph is “hors commerce” and I could see that “H.C.” and the following Roman number were written with different pencils.

I believe that the HC at least would almost certainly have been added by the person making the prints.

Anthony Fawcett is still around, you might reach out to him, or perhaps to Wanda Hawkins (Ronnie is recently passed).  They may have some knowledge.

Anthony was recently interviewed regarding the Rock and Roll Revival show in Toronto.

I tried to contact Fawcett, but the email bounced back :/

I thought he had shared stories about that signing session somewhere else, not just in the book, but if there wasn’t anything else, that’s ok.
