Hi All,

My first post....

A friend of mine obtained the following signature at an Obama rally last month & I am looking for opinions about authenticity. The signature is on a photo & my concerns are that it seems to have characteristics of an autopen.... Any opinions? Thanks....

I'd love to see the video if you want to post it.

Pics, too!

Steve,

I am not sure if I may continue on this discussion or has Mr. Carl Ryan closed the discussion with the final conclusion on the authenticity of this autograph.

I do still believe it has a good possibility of being authentic, there definitely are a few issues and one being it almost looks as if it is preprinted. That is one of the main reasons I would never authenticate via scan. I do offer an on-line examination but that is (Likely) or (Not Likely) to be genuine with a statement saying **Please note this based upon a scan. The only way to truly examine and authenticate an autograph is to physically examine the signature, the ink and the item that has been signed.

I would be willing to examine and authenticate this signed photo for free for Mr. Dennis Allen if he wishes to submit it for examination.
I also would like to add a guaranteed documented recent in person Barack Obama autograph  to this discussion.

Please add the autograph Mike . Thanks

With your examplar I still dont see the autograph being authentic. I barely started to study Obama last night . From first glance I thought it was real as well .
I domt think its a pre print as you can see where there was a smear or missing part of the B .
Also wouldnt they use a authentic autograph to pre print the autograph off .

Thanks for the offer, Mike. Pending the outcome of this discussion I may accept your kind offer.

Anthony,
What is the main thing that is bothering you about the autograph? I also as I said see a few issues but will stick with Likely Genuine  (based upon a scan). I have 100's of exemplars of Obama from the past 6-7 years. For what seems to be a simple signature, President Obama is pretty difficult due to his many variations in his signatures. Also the volume of signature he signs at an event, and the speed in which he signs them.
There is often inconsistence in the shapes and sizes of his B and the O. I will list a few more exemplars tomorrow .

The signature is not a preprint. The photo was taken to the event where the signature was obtained. The signature almost looks like a preprint when you have it in front of you. That look made me think autopen, which I no longer do due to the discussion on this board. That means the discussion has evolved to simply if this is a proxy or genuine signature. I appreciate all the opinions being expressed. You must admit, this discussion has become almost a beginning primer on the difficulties of authenticating inperson signatures. This example is unusual due to the circumstances it was obtained when thinking about the inperson experience. Normally you actual see the person sign; with the Obama campaign signatures that is usually not the case as the items are taken to the backstage area. Whomever ends up signing this material, be it Obama himself or a proxy, the event is likely rushed due to the volume of items and the schedule of the campaign. If a proxy signed this night in Cleveland this proxy was fairly accomplished, as we all seem to initially think this a good signature. I am suprised that this signature so far has been unique as to the exemplars provided. Surely a proxy this accomplished would be showing up quite a bit, yet this signature thus far is a unique example. That, in my opinion is a good thing. Another point that is unusual in this inperson case is we can actually access the President's schedule on the day before and the day this was signed. If you look here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/schedule/president/2012-10-24 you can see he was exhausted by the time he arrived in Cleveland. This may have contributed to some of the variations noted. Great discussion so far and I thank you all for participating.

One more before I go to sleep ( Fighting off this mob here is exhausting :).

Here is a simple break down of what Im seeing . I dont have any autograph credentials. Im a student of the game and can say I will always be one. Autographs are always changing . This may be one you are correct on . I personally just dont see it .
