Here is a photo of the autograph. It is signed on the back of a ripped piece of paper that announced upcoming shows for that week at First Avenue. Prince was leaving, and this was signed in the entry way on a cocktail table. Chic, his bodyguard, was with him and not happy we bothered Prince for an autograph.

Hi Sam,  I also live in St. Paul and I may have been at the same show because I saw Prince at First Avenue a bunch of times - especially during this period which is about when Purple Rain came out. I met Prince briefly at First Avenue once, but I didn't ask him for an autograph - I was so shocked to run into him when he was standing by himself in a corner watching people - that didn't last long. You lucked out to get this. He's very elusive and one of the worst signers in the business - he makes Dylan look like a good signer. In the past Prince would occasionally sign at album release events, but those items rarely surface. Rabid Prince fans at fan sites often ask how to get an autograph. Because of this there are a ton of forgeries. The only way to know that something is truly authentic is to see it signed yourself. If you got it in person my feeling is that this is the only authentication needed. You could write up how you got it and even have it notarized. About a value - whatever you can get. Again, that is hard to figure out because authentic examples rarely surface. Try finding one. Of course, a signed album or a nice photo helps the value, but a signature is a signature. I hope this helps!

Jamil - thanks for the info. When we met Prince at First Avenue he wasn't performing that night. He was seated in the upper balcony in what apparently was a private type seating area. We saw that he got up to leave and hurried out to the entry way. My girlfriend (wife) said it was her birthday and if would sign an autograph for her. Chic kept pushing him a long, and my wife said it really was her birthday. Prince said "yeah right", so she got out her drivers license, haha. He didn't look at it. He stood there looking at us, and goes "well??", and that's when I ripped the paper off the bulletin board, and borrowed a pen from a very unamused waitress. He signed it, said "Happy Birthday", and left. Very awesome experience.
