Reputable Auction Sites Similar To Ebay For Selling Autographed Memorabilia

Hello everyone,

I have been wanting to ask this question for a while, b/c slowly i have had my fill of ebay. I love the site as a buyer, but as a seller life stinks, at least for me. Whether its getting hit with large seller fees, having to deal with non payments, not being able to leave any feedback when a buyer leaves you negative feedback that is ludicrous, or dealing with foreigners on the phone, i just have reached my limit.

I spent a great deal of time the last 2 weeks trying to work out an issue with ebay, and probably got passed around to 15 different people, who said 20 different things. They lied directly and refused to put their manager on the phone. So I have had it, and will not be selling through them anymore.

Of course that is a problem for sellers who want to have their items viewed by the max number of people, on a site that has autograph credibility on some level. Going on Amazon, ioffer, or really anywhere else i can think of and trying to sell items certed by psa and jsa, or obviously authentic autographs, seems like it probably would end up with little activity. I looked on amazon and a few others like ebid etc, and their was basically zero interest in autographs. And i dont want to take a huge hit on what i paid for an item.

Does anyone out their know of a solid site where autographs are sought out by collectors besides ebay? Im not speaking of the auction house/consignment type deals where you have to send in your items. But rather a format similar to ebay in selling structure. Surely their must be one somewhere, but it seems all i can find are coaches corner type of sites. And we all know that those sites arent sought after by anyone.

Thanks for reading and look forward to some opinions.

You would think someone would step up and compete with ebay, but sadly no. They are basically a monopoly in my opinion. Yes, there are other auction sites, but none that come close to ebay.

And I completely agree, it is horrible for sellers.

Problem with other auction sites right now is that the forgery ratio seems to be much higher on them.  As messed up as Ebay is, at least it's possible to find authentic material and some real gems.  Good luck on those other sites, which don't seem to be policed at all.  Some sellers, after getting booted off of Ebay, set up shop on ioffer or ebid - since they know it's much, much easier to get away with their crap there.  Music forgery seller autographedmusicphotos.com is one such example.

I couldnt agree more. I really would feel out of place posting authentic autographs for sale on those sites. And thats a sad sad thing.

I am looking for the same thing. Buying on ebay is great but selling is horrible.

How about consigning to like R&R?  http://www.rrauction.com/consigning.cfm

Hi Wascher. Thanks for the advice. I actually just got done consigning quite a few items with them. Some were in this last auction, some in the August, and i think a few in September.

I used them for my bigger named items, but unfortunately i have a large number of items the wouldnt except due to value, genre, etc. I have alot of metal bands and a ton of guitarist autographs. Ebay is a good route for selling these items, but after the phone conversation i had with a rep a few days ago, i am just done selling their. Their seller service is horrible, at least in my opinion.

But thanks for the link, and if i could consign everything through them, id definetly do it.

Take Care

Carl

How much fee do you have to pay for cosign with auction house?

I have never sold anything through an auction company but from what I understand 20% is the about the industry standard.

Hi John T, John McGinnis is basically correct. I forget what ebay commissions, but for RR auction, if your item sales for under 199 dollars than they take 20 percent. If its above 199 than you pay out 15 percent. But thats not the end. You additionally have to pay 15 dollars per item to publish them in the catalog (that includes the online and printed catalog, and applies whether the item sales or not). And then shipping to and from (if their are any unsold items). Its alot, but the odds of getting better sales are more their than on ebay, so i thought i would give this a try.

Ebay fees are 10% of final value (including shipping), and if you use paypal (which most do) it's an additional 2.9% + 30cents per item.   So ebay is approximately 13%, which is a bit under auction houses.  In my opinion for anything in the $1-$1000 range, ebay is your best bet (and you have the most interest in items under $300)...once you get over that (or if they are more oddball with a specific audience) the specialized auction houses will get you the most $.   ie Heritage, Hunt, etc for sports, RR etc

Ok, here's my top 10 in order for eBay alternatives.

#1 Amazon

#2 ecrater

#3 ioffer

#4 Tias.com

#5 GoAntiques.com

#6 Sears.com

#7 Bonanzle.com

#8 Craigslist

#9 Gemm.com (music related)

#10 Blogs or fansite forums.

Hope this helps.  As a side note, we also consign items and take all the work out of you selling your items.  We list to all of the above in addition to some premium auction sites that allow us to add our products with reserves and of course eBay as well.   Rates are 20-30% depending on the item(s).  Message me directly to mike@autographpros.com if you are interested.
