Here it is
I think John had a tendency to make dramatic statements in order to push whatever point he was trying to make at the time. It was very defective communication as it gave whoever he was speaking to something they could publish, a quote for every occasion.
IMO where it breaks down is when it's taken too literally, just like the comment John made to George Martin on one of, if not the last occasion that they met; John said to GM that he'd like to remake everything The Beatles ever did. George replied by asking "Even Strawberry Fields?" to which John answered......."Especially strawberry fields!"
Yes, George has commented that he was amazed by the fact that John rarely liked his voice raw and always wanted to change it with double tracking etc.
My point in that story was that I don't think John really meant that he wanted to remake everything The Beatles ever did, just going over the top in making the point that he was never totally satisfied with the finished product and that it was in his nature to try new things. Maybe a comment on a difference in their outlook on the finished recordings rather than a dig at George Martin?
