Hi there,

Are these authentic  early ELP signatures?  The programme itself is worth the asking price.

the only examples I have seen that resemble aspects of these sigs is from "eil.com" and I don't even know if this is a trusted business

My overall first impression is Fake

I understand these are advertised as 1971 but there are some very odd traits.

Emerson > "E" looks like a "C" ; and a pointed "s" : did Keith forget to add the "r" in his last name?

Lake > never seen an ending that looks like "E"

Carl > the "C" is crooked and or jagged

Palmer > the "er" is very atypical and so is the whole of  Carl Palmer

However, all this being said, why would someone ruin a rare 1971 program?

This seller does not deal in autographs on the whole, so why are these being offered?

There are some parts that look OK but I gotta tell ya... no matter what expert authenticated these, I would always have my personal doubts. I would need to see more than a few similar examples before I believed these were Legit and you already know you have to ask Epperson first and foremost.

I will tell you one other direction. Carl Palmer has a Facebook page and I once sent a request for signature's feedback on a very rare ELP item. His secretary got back to me saying she showed the item to Carl and he was pretty sure they were Legit. BUT.... artists are not well known for authenticating signatures. It's worth a shot but you may not get a reply before this auction ends.

This would be a fantastic item if real, but I have too many doubts.

Agree with Goodcat, particularly the Emerson.

Thanks for the input guys, it's a shame to ruin a collectable programme,  They did look faded to me as if they were signed way back then, but I will look at some other signatures from that time if I can find any to make a comparison.

To me that's the same signature when I compare the two.

We just need a Greg and Carl now.

It's similar but not the same (providing it's real as Tim mentioned)

In Tim's example, Keith remembered to add the "r" and it has the more proper characteristic of his "s"

BTW...

this really does help Tim and thx for posting this example. I saw it on RR auctions but completely forgot about it. It's a great example of the "E" in question.

I don't think this is a piece to be walked away from just yet. If real, these are about as rare it gets for ELP sigs

David

You know I'm a big ELP fan, and I think this still warrants further research. Or at least putting on file for future comparisons. Also, I'm sceptical of the pointed "l" in Palmer sig.

We are seeing different aspects of the ink. To me, the ink is not properly faded for the time period. I see no fading at all.

I would like Eric Longo to have a look at the ink. Although for proper analysis it would need to be in hand.

here is the sellers reply

IMO it's worth $15 for Epperson opinion

New message from: mousebender-1 (126Turquoise Star)

Hi there,
I am 63 years old. I went to see ELP in the Capitol Theatre Cardiff when I was 16, the night before sitting my French O level. All 3 members if the band signed my poster after the concert. The poster was on my walk for a while and has been in my possession ever since.

I have been looking for a Carl Palmer signature from his days with atomic rooster to try to make a comparison but can't find anything, it could be that the keith signature is in different ink? It would be great if it all ties in because it's a great piece from their 'long haired " era.I will ask Roger and see what he thinks, there's the same programme albeit in great condition but without signatures  on ebay for $200.

I wish you the best buddy

I can't find more definite examples either.

These are confusing the heck outta me as I continue to stare at them and compare them to others.

His story makes time period sense and the photo Tim posted matches the Emerson "E". I do know that Carl's sig was more basic back then compared to now, and Greg Lake?.... well ya never know what that dude was going to do haha.

Let us know what Roger says and take it from there

Yes Greg an endless enigma ;)

Had this reply asking how they got the signatures " was it waiting for them after the show?"

Hi! I actually just copied that text from my mum it’s her poster I’m just selling it for her, she just said yes she did ☺️

OK wait what?

Am I now to understand that it's the seller's mom's poster and she got the autographs in person?

That's a much different story than the reply I got.

Now I'm more confused but I don't want to jump to conclusions just yet.

Now we need another member to send this seller a question and compare notes. Anyone here want to volunteer for this task and post the reply?

Save your $15 for Roger's opinion until we get a straight story from this seller

There's still 2 1/2 days til auction ends
