I found this at a local record store for $8. It’s on a reissue of Talking Dust Bowl that would date to approximately 1960 or thereabouts. I’m not sure what to think of the autograph. Sure, it looks bad, but the guy did die of Huntington’s, and examples of his writing can be found where his hand is shaking, making his writing look similar to what you see here. But this is a little past what I’ve seen previously. But, again, what I saw previously would predate this. Also, I’m not sure if this coming in with a bunch of records that presumably belonged to somebody that died (instead of being sold as real right off the bat) helps its chances of being authentic or not. I don’t actually know how one would go about authenticating this, since I’m not sure how much writing is available from Guthrie from the end of his life to use as a point of reference. Any thoughts? Does it seem like an obvious forgery, or might this be actually real? I’m not sure myself. More a curiosity at this point, really
