I'm new to the site, so please forgive any perceived ignorances on my part. I am -- with your help! -- learning. I've become interested in the world of serious autograph seeking, and I'm doing some research for what I hope will turn into a feature article. I'm fascinated by how word gets out about who will be where (celebrity-wise), how those in the autograph community mobilize, and how that translates into either success of failure. I have written for GQ and Details magazine, among others, and I'd be very grateful to anyone who has a few minutes to chat and provide further thoughts and/or direction. Just message me, or send a friend request, or respond here, of course!

Cheers!

It all depends on who and what your looking to collect...I have got many in person autos and also been denied by the best of them as well...it all comes down to timing and crowd exposure...I have been very fortunate but have missed out on autos as well do to fighting with other fans just to get a piece of a celeb...heres just a few tips

When a celeb is doing a interview on a radio station or television show

When a celeb is staying at a hotel

When a celeb is promoting a movie

When a celeb is getting off an air plane

Its really all about timing and being in the know with other local collectors that get inside scoops...since I am very fortunate ti live in the Big Apple there much more accessible...

Thanks, CEE GEE! How long have you been collecting? Are you out pounding the pavement most days or usually only when there's a viable tip?

I been collecting since 1986...but really started getting serious in the mid and late 90s...and really much more serious within the last 8 to 10 years...I really have not had much time to do the whole "hound" thing but I have been guilty of it many times...one of my buddies was a real serious hound and because of him I have went to certain events to get some in person freebee autos but since he moved quite far I haven't went since the mid summer were we both scored quite well...but since he is so much more seasoned then I am he got about twice as many autos...but once again living in NYC most of the time celebs are around here and there and most often I am not prepared and just get a quick hello in...my friend would go 3 and 4 nights a week...but living with my wife...shes not having that...LOL...but real quick...just to tell you how crazy it is...one time we were waiting for Reggie Jackson to come out of a local radio station and right in front of us Mary.J Blige jumped out of a car and no one even seen her except for me and my buddie...I was torn to get a pic with her but didn't do so....she was with another guy and girl and it would have been quite easy because she was entering a restaurant unseen by all the collectors waiting for Jackson...I should have jumped on the op but didn't and Reggie dipped out the other side of the building and I missed both of them... that's just how it is sometimes...but in that case with 2 celebs...that happened to me once...but my buddie once went to get Billy Joel's auto and Woody Allen jumped out of a car and the same thing happened...he didn't know who to get and he missed out on both....LOL

I think that world of in-person autograph collecting was a member of this sites life for a long time. I'm sure Mike Airing has a lot of stories.

I'd also take a look at http://www.autographu.com/ Rafi. You can get in touch with Matt Raymond who also posts here very occasionally. His site has a lot of information on this and how useful of a tool something like Twitter has become in the autograph collecting world.

Thanks, Brick! Really appreciate the guidance. I'm going to post another forum topic soon, as well, and would love you guys to weigh in on that too, if possible.

Try not to bring mounds of things to be signed. This creates a similar reaction to when my cat sees my neighbour's dog look at him through the fence.

So true...greed kills the real fans that just want an auto for themselve...this is true some guys roll out with many items to be signed and while some celebs don't care most will only sign a few and runaway...in the matter of usually a minute or so of signing....I usually bring one thing MAYBE 2...But mostly one item...since Iam not in the business of selling and mostly collecting

i have been doing it for 15 years and am currently in the process of making a documentry on IP collecting. I have a ton of stories. the audacity of some people, i have seen people approach an artist with 30 albums, no lie. i have also seen said artist sign every single one of them haha

Would love to see this!

Mike I would love to see this as well...please let me know about that project...it sounds really awesome

Also like Mike says about people just gauging celebs for signatures...about 3 or 4 years ago there was this huge charity dinner for tennis going on in mid town Manhattan...the media and red carpet was out...I am not sure if it was for charity or whatever...but I was actually working on the same block of the event that night and just happened to be there...

Billie Jean King walked out of the building right in front of my partner and I and there was a collector that literally had stopped her and she was signing sepia 16x20s and all sorts of 8x10s and tennis balls for this guy...now I wasn't there to collect autos but I watched this guy totally ruin it for everyone else looking to get a piece of the legend...its a real shame that when it comes down to free autos from celebs how greedy some collectors can be and simply ruin it for others...my hound buddy also told me how he was going after Clint Eastwood who is a tuff auto in itself get auto blocked by another scumbag collectors feeding him about 10 8x10 photos...he got so disgusted he jumped in his car and left...when Clint comes to town he seriously sparks riots with autograph hounds...everyone wants a piece of the legendary american icon...

Hey Mike...I personally never been there to get him...(Eastwwood) that was what I was told...Not sure if its much more laid back in LA but in NYC when it comes down to getting signatures it can be really grimy at times but not all the time...there are guys that come armed with so much stuff its crazy...Now once again I am not knocking it because you can make a great living on getting a stack of autos first hand and selling them off...but in my case when I want 1 auto just for myself its really hard to compete...There is know doubt I believe your story...but was told recently that Eastwood had 4 cars of collectors following him for autos...now that has got to be stressful on any celeb...but once again...I was not present for that either...
