Out of curiosity, how does the ink fade that badly?  The ball doesn't look incredibly old.  Direct sunlight?

Might just be the ink type (which I know very little about, but many on this forum do).  You can still see the signature fairly well, but it looks like the color changed.  Just curious, cause I have a few sign balls (all signed within the past 10 years or so) and all of them look a bit different - a couple have bold, perfect sigs, while one or two look a bit lighter and might already be fading a bit.

Fluorescent lights can do it also
