Hello,

I decided as a hobby this year to go around to local autograph signings and have people from a few franchises I am a fan of to sign posters. I decided on Star Trek and Firefly as both are easy to collect and I am a fan of both. This weekend alone I was able to get seven Trek signatures (6 TOS, one Fist Contact/Voy) and will be getting some main cast members over the summer.

While I don't plan on selling the posters I was still wondering about the value of the posters - will having multiple signatures on a single poster ever "pay off" (break even or increase the value by having multiple together) or will having a bunch on one item decrease the individual values?

The answer always depends on who you get to sign.  If you add extras or background players ...you will most certainly lose.

A Firefly poster with just the main 9 actors you may indeed see a profit ...somewhere down the line.

If you choose to add minor guest stars at today's price points you will most certainly lose.

I had a discussion just yesterday with a friend who has been working on a Walking Dead poster from the first season. He started early enough to put Norman Reedus, Jon Bernthal, et al on there early at about $25 each, but today the extra cast members are charging $40-$60 each. With nearly 50 signatures on the poster, he will never ever see the money back that he has invested into the signatures let alone the travel expenses and admissions to each show.

Thanks. That's kinda what I figured. I have no plans to sell, wondering more long term than short (If in fifty years when I'm dead will there be any value for my descendants or will I have just lost a bunch of money?)

The Firefly I'm doing just the main cast. Same with Game of Thrones, if anyone of them come by my area.

The Star Trek I am probably going to end up with a mix. The TOS signatures I got weren't extras but the episodes guest stars (I figure TOS options are getting in pretty short supply and was a big part of my youth so I'm going to grab them where I can) and the rest I'm getting will be main cast from the various series' or recurring characters.

I'm not really worrying about the admission price or travel - I look at them as separate from the autograph price because I'm not going anywhere just for the autographs, Im going to have a fun day out and the autographs are a bonus. The only con I'm considering going to thats more than an hour away I'm thinking of doing as part of a three day weekend with my wife, and would have five peoples for signatures, including Takei (leaving Koenig as the only living TOS main cast member I would be missing at the end of summer).

If we are looking at long term, when you are gone, chances are they will all be gone as well. It may not be a great investment, and your return will not make your kids or grandkids rich, but the items will very likely have value, maybe even more than you spent.
