Hello, I bought this rare Fireball Roberts autograph on ebay of Nascar's first star driver. He died in a crash in 1964, so this has to be older than that. What do you think about the signature, paper, is the fade appropriate? Appears to be off a receipt, maybe a check. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mark,

As the webmaster for www.FireballRoberts.com, I have been asked about Fireball autographs. I live in his hometown of Daytona Beach and had longtime contact with his wife and daughter (both now deceased). I have collected 21 different autographs (photographs, programs, checks, etc.) and some similar to the one you have which is off a checkbook. I actually considered bidding it on Ebay for this piece, but really, I have enough of them. I would guesstimate your autograph would be in the $250.00 range judging by my purchases.

Glenn signed “Fireball” only if the check or receipt was made out to “Fireball”. He really didn’t care much for the nickname and his friends and competitors called him Glenn. For his everyday checking account he would sign “Glenn Roberts”. Your autograph is as authentic as they get! The tell-tale F, R and the swooping S and overall slant is dead-on to my authenticated autographs. Congrats!

Mark, I am only a collector and I am not an authenticator. If this is for you to keep, then it’s real. You can feel confident if you want to sell it that it’s real. These are VERY hard to come by.

Hope this helps you,

Roland Via, Webmaster

Thank you for the excellent feedback.

Best Regards,

Mark
