I have a friend who has acquired signed entertainment and sports memorabilia over the course of a few decades. A lot of his collection is either obviously real, plausible, or pretty shoddy fakes.

This item struck me as odd, though.

The back is labeled:

Paul Bryant
1941 - US Navy
Pre Flight School
Athens, GA

I can't find this picture online for the life of me, so I have no idea where it came from. I tried to look for other examples of his signature, but he had a lot of different signatures... A lot of times, the P was done in a single stroke, but sometimes he used two like the picture above. Sometimes the lower-case L is tall, sometimes it's short. I found some pictures of him from the mid 40s, so I'm fairly certain it's a picture of him, but if the signature is fake, why would they fake a signature on something that isn't immediately recognizable? What's the market on the "Ehh, that might be the guy," memorabilia?

I'd like to learn about all this stuff to help him get a handle on what he has, so commentary is appreciated -- pro or con!

Here's a site with a few examples of (presumably legit?) different signatures:

Thanks!
