psa/dna do they really know what their doing?

I sent an item to PSA/DNA to get a C.O.A. thinking it would help me sell my item and be worth more was I wrong!!! It came back with 9 items wrong with the autograph and was deemed fake.It cost me almost a$100 for nothing . I called them and told them they were wrong that I personally had the item signed by the sports athlete and I was standing right next to him,which is true. They told me since they were not present at the signing  it was their opinion that it was fake because it did not pass their test., and that what they give is only an opinion and it may not be the same as someone else s. I just want to know if anyone else had this happen to them?

Yeah it happens. Mike explained it pretty well i think. They do the best they can with the information they have. And sometimes it takes a while for them to get the newest examplars or the odd autographs. And they have to base their opinion off of the norm, so their are gonna be good items that get turned down. And that will be the case everywhere you go. Unless you hit up morales, gai, or a place that passes anything. But they really seem to do a good job for the most part and their cert does carry an increase in value. They are def not perfect but PSA, JSA and some others are helping to clean up the industry for sure,  so i guess we have to weigh the good they are doing to the bad, such as the case with your auto. It sucks  that it happened, but sometimes they dont know, and in those cases they fail it as well.

Here's the general problem with PSA:  They don't have a stranglehold on every autograph out there, but they seem to sell that as being the case.  Honestly, I'm not sure what their area of expertise is supposed to be.

Keep in mind, some celebrities just have an awful scribble of a signature that you just can't authenticate.  There are always rushed examples that, while authentic, won't match up favorably with known examples signed in more ideal circumstances.  PSA isn't going to be much help here.

But then, you see PSA sometimes bless off on something they can't possibly deem authentic as a third party authenticator.  I've seen these two gems listed back to back from the same seller on ebay for a while now, and if PSA really authenticated them, I have no idea what they were thinking:

It also has a PSA coa. It would be nice to know who the "authenticator" was and what example they used wouldn't it? Would this same item pass the PSA quick opinion if just the signature was shown?  I sure hope not.

The seller has MANY good items, still, they seem to get a COA for ANYTHING they obtain.  Is that the case?  We will never know what kind of deal they have with PSA and JSA.  Is every item given 100% total scrutiny?  Is every item looked at by the expert known for the related genre?

Authentication of Autographs isn't an exact science and opinions from so called expert very from one to another and just an opinion and only good as their credibility. PSA/DNA wouldn't know a real autograph if it bit them where the sun doesn't shine. Best to try and obtain from direct sources and in person if possible. Most autographs on eBay regardless PSA DNA or not are more then likely fakes.

Any way you can post a picture of the item they turned down . Along with the Psa Rejection letter. For $100 it had to be a big name . The person must be dead or a huge name who sells good . Like Michael JOrdan for them to charge almost a $100 .

The rejection letter is generic usually. The nine things are things that can be wrong . Maybe some people here can explain why your autograph doesnt look right to psa.

Yes I learnt the hard way..

I was taken to court by a company because I accused them of selling fake items.

  1. I couldn’t get PSA/DNA for anything because the way they say likely not genuine.
  2. Some authenticators also say likely not genuine but it could be a genuine item. (They contradict themselves)
  3. I also realised why would they say your items are genuine when they want you to buy from their own sites.
  4. It’s a vicious circle.  I take authenticators opinions now with a grain of salt.

So you accuse someone of selling fakes and they took you to court ?

Was it for slander ?

You also are under the impression psa has there own website they sell there own autographs on ?

 

Ive had my fair share of problems with psa and jsa . But if I were to take some one to court for selling me a fake autograph . I dont think for one minute my $8 opinion from psa would matter much to a judge. I think it would be best to seek out a expert witness in that type of autograph (ie , sports, music,hollywood) . I would then think I would have to pay for there transportation ( airfare,time, and work) . I would think it would cost anywhere from $2 to $3 grand. Even more. Then I would also be aware the person can ask my expert witness questions and things may come up against that witness to detour there credibility . I would then think the Judge would make a decision based soley on facts. Not a $8 opinion .

I had them say "unable to render ANY opinion" for ALL THREE of the items I sent in.  At least I got my money back, but still disappointed nonetheless..

These clowns were at a show in Langley BC last year, and a friend of mine, who does auctions for Junior Hockey teams had them look at 2 items. One was a random item, that John knew NOTHING about, and the other was signed IN PERSON by Joe Sakic.....guess which one was "authenticated"???

In 1973 I ran into Muhammad Ali at a shoe store in Chicago. He very politely gave me a personalized autograph. Last year JSA failed it saying the signature was way off and Ali didn't personalize autographs.

Do you have a photo to put up . Ali is tough to authenticate , but the vintage ones are not . I have about 7 or 8 personalized in my coolection. I wonder why they told you that . Mine are jsa'd .
