Are both of those certifications about as good as you can get in terms of authentic autographs?

Can't speak for JSA, but I have only one experience with PSA being at a show.  They specifically note the "Sun-Times" Sports Show in their description.  Well they were on site at the Sun-times show I went two a couple years ago, charging 7 or 8 bucks for their sticker.  They weren't really in the proximity of the actual signings, making it incredibly easy for anyone who wanted to to pull a fast one if they felt like it.  It took well over a month to get the info in their system, at which time there was the lamest description of the item (athlete's name, and that's about it) and no mention of the actual event or signing date - the event was in early March but the only "authentication date" listed was well over a month after the event.  Considering that you could take exact proof video or photo of most athletes as they signed your stuff, the PSA service was basically worthless.  The whole operation was sloppy and lazy, as many fans who attended the event can confirm.

That's really too bad.  I wonder if it was just an isolated event.

Certainly possible.  I've heard of plenty of frustration with how long it takes PSA to get items in their system regardless.
