Reggie Jackson and Joe D sigs

Hello everyone,

I am a new member and just trying to find my way around. I have a few questions and was hoping someone could answer. Does anyone know when Reggie Jackson began placing the "44"
in the loop of the "J"? I understand he did that to help separate his authentic signature from forged ones but am not sure. Also, I believe Joe DiMaggio also began using some sort of small marker on his signature, again to aid in distinguishing that from forgeries. Does anyone know anything about Joe D and these markers and when he began doing it, if he really did, since all the signed Joe D items I see on Ebay do not have such a marker. Thanks for the help.

Nelson, any "gimic" these athletes came up with to confuse forgers, the forgers eventually figure out. Joe D used to put 2 dots in the "i" at the end of DiMaggio, one dot on top, one underneath to ensure it was real, but it didn't take long for forgers to catch on to that. Joe D did use marker quite often on balls, most of which are authentic. (Forgers would go with pen because it's more desirable.)

At the end of the day, you have to take the entire signature into question, you can't just buy something based on if it has a 44 in the J, or it says "Joe Dimaggio" in marker...

All of these signatures are forgeries, and yes the Jackson has "44 in the J", and DiMaggio has 2 dots on the last "i" ...

Thanks so much. It makes one paranoid about buying any signed memorabilia. However, you have to admit that there is SOME authentic stuff out there. It can't ALL be forged. Provenance is important and witnessed authentication has to provide some amount of certainty. In this regard, wouldn't a Reggie Jackson signature item (a ball with the "44") with an RJ.com authentication, numbered hologram, and RJ.com signed COA pass muster? I was considering buying such an item and, hence, my question about when he started using the "44".
