Everyone ~
Relatively new to the group, and I wanted to get everyone's input on this recently acquired Single Signed, HOF Dazzy Vance [Nat C. Strong] Spalding Baseball.
PSA Quick Opinion has already given me a "Likely Genuine" on this piece, but my question for the forum is more geared towards the rarity of the Nat C Strong baseball, the condition of the ball, and the rarity of a single signed Dazzy Vance.
Using google I was able to establish a fairly good overview of Strong's biography, his importance to the game around the turn of the 20th century, and if course knowing a bit about Dazzy Vance, learning that his single signed baseball's are rare, but how rare?
I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on the ball, the signature, and the idea of holding on to it, or taking it to auction.
Thanks.
Mark

The ball actually looks like it had some writing removed below the Vance. I see some shadowing and staining, which might be more obvious under different lighting. The PSA $2800 SS ball price is for a clean ONL/OAL ball, I believe. Even if the ball is rare, I doubt it really adds value to the signature or vice-versa. If anything, the ball being a private label ball (unless the ball is worth more than the signature) would lower the value of the signature. That, coupled with it being a side-panel and seeming retraced (the ink color makes it appear like multiple pens are used) would likely drop the value significantly.
I'd say you're looking at *maybe* $600-$800 without authentication and maybe just under twice that number with authentication.
