You guys were so helpful when I posted my pic of the Mantle/Dimaggio ball, that I thought maybe you could help me verify authenticity of a Ted Williams signed photo I'm thinking of buying. Thanks again for the help!

Hello Matt...just a couple of questions so I can try to give you an educated guess...

how much is it ?

is it certified ?

Ted Williams like Mantle and Dimaggio are in the market but the forged ones are at much greater number then the genuine ones...Williams is a little tricky...i see good and bad quality's about this auto...the good points of the auto is the "D" going into the "W"...the loops are usually missed by the forgers..but a usual give away is the bad "T" and that almost is always a give away for me of a Ted Williams fake...but its quite hard to pin point it...here is a bad Williams cleat I attached...this is a classic BAD Williams forgery..

thanks for the info. It costs $125 and is certified by AAU...I just looked up AAU and see good and bad opinions....
I would stay away from it...Iam no expert but comparing to the good the bad and the ugly Iam really not sure...if in your gut it don't seam right or looks fishy...90% of the time its not good...playing those odds in my experience I would stay away just to play it safe...but if someone else can provide a better answer will just have to wait and see...Iam sure there will be more comments added to this topic

I wouldn't touch a Williams auto that is certified by AAU. I have yet to see a genuine Williams certed by AAU. Wouldnt touch a Mantle, Dimaggio, Koufax, Ali from AAU either. Most likely originated from AlwaysAtAuction and being flipped.

Even if by chance it was authentic the value would be killed by all the fakes they have out there. I'd rather take my chances on one that isn't certed by AAU. Least theres still a chance it MIGHT be authentic.

Heres an authentic Ted Williams auto on a common Baseball card that you can use for an example...but that being said Ted Williams "T" even has various changes in it in the authentic examples...
Heres some more examples to stay away from...These Ted Williams examples are ALL forgeries !

another bad one to compair to...looks similar to the photo in question...this one is 100 percent bad !

wow, the Ted Williams forgeries seem a lot less obvious to me than the Dimaggio and Mantle. What is it about these Williams signatures above that make it clear that they're fake? I definitely have some homework to do!
this (sepia toned photo) and the (list of black and white fakes 4 out 5) were all produced by the famous operation bullpen ring...this is a perfect example of that style that's shown in that book...if your looking to start collecting...read that book it would make your head spin on how many forgeries were pumped into the market for years and how those crooks made over $100,000,000.00 in revenue off fakes...OPERATION BULLPEN by KEVIN NELSON...it will truly make you sick to your stomach...it changed my views about autos forever...a great read and even greater tool...check it out
I JUST NOTICE ANOTHER BAD PIECE AUTHENTICATED BY AAU CURRENTLY AT AUCTION...DEFINITELY STAY CLEAR FROM THAT WILLIAMS IN QUESTION
Thanks for all your help bro....I'm going to stay away from it, as you suggested. I'm going to keep your pictures for future reference, thanks. Also, do you find that PSA and JSA are pretty reputable companies? Or do you usually just go by your own expertise?
Theres no question PSA/DNA and JSA are the leaders of authentication...I own signed items from both authenticators...as far as G.A.I , G.A. and A.A.U. it is well known that they have authenticated bad items...unfortunately...knowingly or not there are some bad items out there that they have deemed authentic...not to say that G.A.I and those other guys haven't authenticated authentic items in the past...in the collectors eyes those authenticators are not ideal and it is best to stay away from because of the ratio of forged items being much higher then authentic items...of course no one is perfect in authenticating items as you know it is just an opinion...even PSA/DNA and JSA has made mistakes in the past...but if it comes down to purchasing between PSA or GAI you better believe I would go with PSA any day of the week...also no matter who signed something or who authenticated it I can tell for the most part if its good or not just from meeting the athlete's first hand and picking out forgery flaws...after doing this for a while it becomes rather easy because the forgers style is almost exactly the same all the time with little or no changes in there version of there style of an autograph...
