AutographLive will be buggy tonight while we test code we're developing for it. Everything should work fine within the next 3-5 hours.

Hi, folks,

Any comments on this Tiger Woods discussion would be much appreciated. The autograph is hand-signed, but is it authentic?

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete, sorry I'm a little late finding this :( This is probably a bit of a long shot but is there any indication anywhere on the front\back of this magazine page that gives any clue as to it's publication date? If I read you correctly YOU bought this circa 2001? Do you have any idea of the year the original owner says it was signed. If we can pin a potential date to this magazine\signature we will take a giant leap along the road to help explaining its probable authenticity of lack thereof :) Best, David.

Hi, David,

I did purchase the autograph around 2001. There are no clues on the front or back of the magazine page as to what magazine it comes from or when it was published. The person I bought it from said they had the full magazine with them at a tournament and had multiple pages signed (I believe that was the explanation, it has been a while). They cut out the Woods signed page and sold it to me. I believe it was signed sometime between 1996 and 1999. My own analysis and some input from friends lead me to think it may be authentic.

By the way, David, LPGA golfer Lorie Kane is my first cousin (our mothers are sisters). As a golf fan, I thought you may know of her. I was born and raised on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and spent a lot of time with Lorie growing up. She and her dad Jack taught me how to golf.

Thanks for the help.

Pete

Hi Pete, ah that's a pity, but we can't win 'em all.

The signature does show some clear consistencies with the signature variant used by Tiger circa 1996 but not too much later as by the end of Masters 1997 his signature form had really begun to evolve and started to show more of the features that are instantly recognisable in his signature today.

To pass an opinion one way or the other I'd really like to have a first-hand look at it and see it side-by-side with signatures from that era that I have but being down in NZ these days that ain't gonna work.

Have you thought about letting Steve Grad or Bob Zafian (over at PSA) take a look? That would cost a bit of your money - $100 probably - but you'll get a hands-on examination and if they do opine that it is authentic then it will be a VERY good investment and worth keeping safely tucked away for the future :)

ABSOLUTELY - great golfer and I do believe that it is Lorie Kane OOC these days isn't it? I'd heard somewhere that she received a "gong" :) Canadian Order of Merit or something. Very impressive and well deserved for all her services to and promotion of "The Maple Leaf". Made even more impressive by the short golf seasons she must have had way up there in the "far north" .... sorry mate, only teasing!

All the best, David.

Hi, David,

I checked in on the cost to send the Woods auto to PSA/DNA or JSA, but there are a lot of extra costs sending and receiving items from Canada to the US. It must be similar for you in NZ. I will definitely send it some day, though. I have never seen that same image of Woods authentically signed. With the analysis I have done, I am about 75-80% sure it is authentic, so it would be worth sending it to the experts, eventually.

Lorie knows I am an autograph buff. The vast majority of my collection (4000+ items) are signed by former and current NHL players. Once Lorie made it to the LPGA, I started to collect golf autographs, too. I have many authentic items signed by Nicklaus, Palmer, and the rest of the PGA gang, and Lorie has brought back some LPGA autographs for me, too. Here's a photo of her she gave me for my collection. It is in a sealed frame, so I apologize for the blurriness of the scan.

Pete

Morning Pete, Great photo that of Lorie and so many wonderful points in it that you can use to teach from - look at her great weight transfer, look at the super turn of the lower body, notice how her right arm goes under her chin as the upper body turns, perfect balanced finish. Super :)

Yup - I also have additional costs - the courier to US and back being expensive :) Sounds as though you've got some really, really nice pieces. Without seeing that Tiger "up close personal" I'd have to say that it has points that make it appear authentic so your analysis is probably right on :)

All the very best, David.

Hi, David,

If you are interested in looking, here are scans of some of the PGA and LPGA autographs I have in my collection. I tend to collect signed cards...a result of me growing up collecting hockey cards. Most of them are certified by Upper Deck or PSA/DNA, but there are a few that are not. I bought those from reliable sources, but feel free to point out any you think might not be authentic. I trust your expert eyes. By the way, my Mom got the Tom Watson/Jack Nicklaus signed course pass when they were at a skins game on Prince Edward Island, so I know they are authentic.

Take care,

Pete

G'day again Pete, Some lovely items there and that is a super example of Tom Watson's, non flat-signed signature. Some folks look at that and compare it to his flat-signed, take-your-time signature or to TTM photos and say ... that's not legit! Tom's signature IS different to that when he sits at his desk and signs and the TTM secretarials are different as well - the one you have there is - in my very humble opinion - 100% authentic :)

Unless I am mistaken - has been known ha ha ha - the UD "Legends" card were released unsigned and it could be worth your while to have them checked.

All the very best, David

Hi, David,

There is 0% doubt the Watson-Nicklaus autographed pass is legit. It was around my mother's neck all day until she had the two legends sign it.

The Arnold Palmer autographs are not Upper Deck Certified. I bought them from a fellow collector. Do they look legit to you? I have spent some time authenticating them and they look 100% good to me. Once I get a package together to send to PSA/DNA, they will likely be included.

Pete

Yup - dead right on the Tom-Jack pass. Lovely piece and nice to get the two great legends/rivals on the one item :)

Arnie's cards : couple of points worth checking up-close-and personal on Arnie's cards - smoothness, formation of the first "r", flow through the "old", especially that "d", size and formation of the capital "P". Certainly worth getting the boys at PSA to take a good look.

Couple from my personal collection for you to compare against - these obtained IP :

Hope all that helps and all the best, David.

G'day again Pete - and ... in return ... just a couple of Tom's signatures for you to see. All the best, David.

Thanks for the tips on the Palmer autographs, David. I'll take some extra time to look them over again.

What do you think of the autographed card I have of fellow-Australasian Greg Norman? He doesn't sign much for companies so he is a hard autograph to get.

Your Watson and other autographs are great. As you see, most of my golf signatures are from Upper Deck, but I think the one-of-a-kind, in-person items are the best.

Case-in-point...Lorie hosted a skins game on PEI in 2000. My Mom was there and Lorie brought her into the players' tent where my mother had the four women sign their respective pages of the tournament program. That item is now in my collection and scans are below. Excuse the off-angle scans as the pages are all still attached and tricky to scan.

Pete

No worries :) Greg has always been a somewhat reluctant signer and that goes right back to his early days in Qld but that is a lovely signed card from him with one of his earlier and classic signature variants.

Wow - four stunning ladies and what an awesome collection of golfing talent. All great signatures and extra nice because Nancy didn't "date" her signature and that can put some people off and then you've got the lovely, full signature from Annika rather than just the abbreviated, first-name, that she so often used in later years and even on her official photos.

Not too sure what time it is with you but I'll be signing off for the end of the day now - some cricket to watch, then an early night and a big run early tomorrow morning.

All the best, David.
