Antiquities Caesars Palace, GFA/Stephen Rocchi and AAU/Drew Max Sued for Autograph Fraud

According to the Courthouse News Service, Mr. Daniel Odobas has filed a lawsuit against Antiquities Of Nevada (Toby Stoffa), Drew Max (Authentic Autographs Unlimited) and Stephen Rocchi (Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators for "Fraud, Deceptive, Trade, Misrepresentation, Unjust Enrichment, Conspiracy, Bad Faith, Breach Of Contract and Breach Of Warranty."

Immediately below are links to the story.

In my opinion, this was a long time coming.

Drew Max of Authentic Autographs Unlimited, gives himself the title of Forensic Document Examiner (FDE).

What in the world does "Forensics" have anything to do with autographs?

Very, very rarely in my opinion.

I don't know of any Forensic Document Examiner who knows sports or music autographs

It is also important to know that COAs and LOAs issued by Forensic Document Examiners or by authentication companies that use them, are much less likely to be genuine.

I have yet to see an authentic autograph of Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams with a COA from Drew Max (AAU).

Not one.

Just below is a link to a thread I wrote on Drew Max and one of his performances on the Pawn Stores show as he Forensically Examined an FDR "Letter To Clergy."

 http://live.autographmagazine.com/profiles/blogs/drew-max-forensic-document-examiner-aau-fdr-letter-to-clergy-pawn

Then, of course, there is Stephen Rocchi and his Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators (GFA) group.

In the six years since Rocchi started GFA, I have yet to see one authentic Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams or Joe DiMaggio autograph with a COA from GFA (Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators).

Also, since when does a Forensic Examination only cost $25.00?

Rocchi does all of the below for $25.00 and still can't get it right.

From Rocchi's website.   Seriously?

You do not need "Forensics" to determine if an autograph is authentic or not.

http://live.autographmagazine.com/forum/topics/roger-maris-forgeries-on-ebay-stephen-rocchi-gfa

Just below is a typical Mickey Mantle forgery on a baseball with a COA from Stephen Rocchi and Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators.

It can be opined in less than one second as a forgery.

What is Rocchi thinking when he issues a COA for the below Mantle forgery?

Rocchi (Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators) has certed dozens of the below set of Mickey Mantle/Roger Maris forgeries on a reproduced Safe At Home poster.

A real authenticator would laugh and dismiss this garbage in a millisecond, but Rocchi has certed dozens of these as authentic.

These are, at best, laughable.

When will all of this "Forensic" madness finally end?

To bad AtAuction was not named as a defendant. Hearing they can't afford timely payroll much less a lawyer. That company needs to be targeted next.
  • J.Seah

I hope there is a class action against these fraudsters. A friend of mine got scammed $2300 by Antiquities Las Vegas about 6 months ago with a fake James Bond's autographs set.

  • terrier8HOF

as word gets out about this, more people that got screwed will come forward.

  • CJCollector

Excellent point, Rick, about John House and AtAuction.

    It's where it all started!!!

  • Richard S. Simon

It is such a shame that so many people who are just plain scum bags infiltrate our great hobby. For some people it is only about $$$ and they will do crooked things without batting an eye and hope they do not get caught. Hopefully this law suit will act as a deterrent to future scum bags.

  • terrier8HOF

I couldn't agree more, Richard.   But the penalty has to be strong enough to be a deterrent.  otherwise, it becomes a risk/reward issue and the rewards with these scumbags, win out.  They have to be hit with serious financial penalties and jail time for it to make any difference.

  • CJCollector

Looks like Ebay seller Rbisportsinc is still selling GFA-certed forgeries.

This lawsuit is great news. Daniel Odobas is a hero for filing this suit. Just a clarification: I

A clarification: While at least one of the articles says Antiquities' owner Toby Stoffa was personally sued, she's not listed in the court records I saw as a defendant. Stephen Rocchi and Drew Max were personally sued, however:

    https://www.clarkcountycourts.us/Anonymous/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=1...

  • Don Webster

I've been in Toby's shop many times...and have had many occasions to talk with her and say hello. And while I'm no expert it was painfully obvious to me what they were up to...

I am in no way surprised that she is about to be challenged...

I hope the plaintiff has deep pockets (I suspect he does) and the patience to see this through...

    I wish him well...

  • Bill Fraser

This needs to be on TV news programs so more people would be informed. Probably a lot of tourists bought one item because they loved it and don't follow autograph websites. If not, they may never find out.
  • Richard S. Simon

I did not realize the Toby referred to was a woman. So nice to see that autograph thievery is an equal opportunity employer :(. I hope she gets financially ruined in this lawsuit. We can only hope this guy is really, really angry and wants his pound of flesh from all these crooks.

  • Richard S. Simon

Seeing that some of these thieves are personally sued puts a song in my heart. Hit the thieves where it hurts, right in the $$$$$.

  • CJCollector

I have always had great disdain for Ted Taylor and Chris Morales, but Rocchi and Drew Max are in front now.

Think of the tens of thousands of forgeries certed by Rocchi and Drew Max.

    Those guys make me sick!!!!

  • Don Webster

Toby is a lady alright....in fact a grandmother 6 times over...

She has a Facebook page if anyone cares to look...

  • Richard S. Simon

Not something I particularly enjoy saying but they should rot in hell. They are no better than a guy with a gun who sticks up a gas station.

  • BallroomDays67

He apparently purchased one of Antiquities' notorious Doors "signed" Morrison Hotel LPs, of which they seem to have an unlimited supply. I've only seen one authentically signed Morrison Hotel, and it was signed only by Jim on the inside gatefold.

  • Rick Meyer

Toby is a world class b1tch. Hope she finally gets what's coming her way. Her grandkids out to be proud of the crooked thief grandma they have.
  • CJCollector

Please note that from time-to-time, I will adding content to the original body of this thread.

  • BallroomDays67

Do you think Drew Max will bring that giant magnifying glass to court as evidence?

  • Joe W.

I hope no one is counting their chickens before they hatch. Could be an out of court settlement when all is said an done. At least, there is more ammunition is use to convince the skeptics the real truth.

  • CJCollector

Joe, you make a good point.

If there is an "Out of Court Settlement," then the same crap will continue.

  • Richard S. Simon

An out of court settlement will almost certainly involve silence among all parties. We will never know what has happened. Remember forensic examiner carries weight in a courtroom. Hobby expert carries less weight in some courtrooms. Even though we in the hobby know the real truth the court does not. Hopefully the plaintiff will be able to show the real truth of what these scum bags really are and how they have stolen so much $$$.

  • terrier8HOF

then they should be beaten at their own game. prove "forensically" that the crap photos they have been peddling were printed after the death of Mantle, Dimaggio etc.

  • michael phillips

    Chris,

Thanks for posting and thanks for all the members replies.

I just hope this case is a winner and deters future scammers and gives people who love the autograph collecting hobby belief to come together and route out these people. Its a process that takes time and determination but its well worth the effort.

  • Richard S. Simon

That can happen. Jimmy Spence and I were jointly sued by a forensic, many years ago. We retained our own forensic for one particular item that was totally bogus.

  • terrier8HOF

the number of GFA Mantle and Dimaggio listings on ebay is WAY down, and the bid activity and prices are ridiculously low.   The sellers are getting concerned and the buyers are getting smarter.  how stupid do you have to be to invest in something where having it certified actually LOWERS the value of the item?

  • Steve

It would be in all of our best interest to keep these threads alive and to reach out to local news agencies so that they can pick up on this story. The more people it reaches, the better.
  • CJCollector

The "Forensic" list continues; Nicholas Burczyk (there is no proof he actually examined any Mantle, DiMaggio, Williams, etc. autographs), Chris "I Never Saw An Autograph I Didn't Like" Morales, Drew Max and Rocchi.

Rocchi took over "authenticating" for John House and AtAuction after House dumped Morales, Max and Ted Taylor.

They are all peas from the same pod.

  • CJCollector

Steve, I have every intention on keeping this thread alive.

I still own items (forgeries) that I purchased from John House & AtAuction.  I still have them in their original UPS packaging.

I have kept them like that for a reason.

    That reason may be soon.

  • CJCollector

Terrier, I do not believe that the "buyers are getting smarter."

I believe the market for that crap (forgeries certed by Rocchi and GFA) is now saturated.

The delusional who buy those forgeries, simply do not need any more for their so-called "autograph collection."

  • terrier8HOF

but there are always new buyers out there.

  • CJCollector

Yes, of course, and that is the reason why prices for that garbage continues to spiral downward.

    The previous market is saturated.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

I hope they depose GFA's FDE John Goraczyk. His testimony should be the most interesting

  • CJCollector

Great you brought that up, Steve.

Another so-called FDE who knows nothing about sports autographs.

  • Richard S. Simon

Chris,, you say there is no proof Burczyk ever examined any of those forgeries. You worded that wrong. There is no proof that Burczyk ever existed except in the mind of the Florida criminals. For all we know possibly like the new authenticator for CC East Coast Authenticators, it could be a total figment of the crooks imaginations.

  • CJCollector

    That's a good point, Rich.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

Here's a link to AAU's Facebook Fan Page. All sorts of revealing posts. Dig in and you may notice that they may not like us:

  • terrier8HOF

check out his April 1, 2014 post (reply).   It seems he also has the ability to predict the future.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

When you add things to the blog, Chris, please post a comment letting us know what it is so we know to take a look. Thanks

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

On Max's FB page, Terrier? I couldn't find it.

  • CJCollector

    Okay, Steve.

  • terrier8HOF

Steve, yes, its on his FB page.I just emailed it to you.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

Thanks, Terrier. They certainly don't like us here. They warn people about us.

  • Richard S. Simon

I would be extremely upset if they liked us. This is war, we don't like the enemy. They are the enemy.

  • Richard S. Simon

The enemy must lose this war. There is a chance now to take a huge step to clean up this business and rid it of this vermin. Hopefully this lawsuit will go to completion.

  • CJCollector

It is certainly a "badge of honor" to have Drew Max not like us.

  • Mike T

Interesting that Drew Max was using his Pawn Stars fame to sell his services, I wonder if the Pawn Stars legal team will get involved in that. We can only hope.

  • Steve Zarelli

    @Mike T

The same way GFA uses Rocchi's past experience with PSA to add credibility. Kind of surprising the PSA legal team isn't all over that with cease & desist orders.

  • Richard S. Simon

Jimmy Spence left PSA to form his own company. I don't think they had any non compete clause in his contract,, or maybe he had something on them :).. So I don't think they have anything with Rocchi that would prevent him from saying he was with PSA.
