Jessica Michelle Chastain (Sacramento, March 24, 1977) is an American actress and film producer. She made her theater debut in 1998 in Romeo and Juliet, following which she obtained a scholarship at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. Before embarking on a film career, she continued to work in theaters and appeared in several television series, before making her big screen debut in 2008 with the film Jolene. She became known in 2011 thanks to the films The Tree of Life, winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and The Help, for the latter she received her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress and won a Critics Choice Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Motion Picture Ensemble. In 2012, thanks to the leading role in Zero Dark Thirty, she obtained her second Oscar nomination for best actress and won the Critics Choice Award for best actress and her first Golden Globe in the best actress in a drama section . In 2021, she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Tammy Faye in the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye, for which she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Motion Picture Actress, her fourth Critics Choice Award and most notably the Academy Award for best leading actress in her third overall nomination. In 2023, she won her third Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film and received her first Emmy Award nomination in the same category for her portrayal of Tammy Wynette in the miniseries George & Tammy . That same year, she received two Tony Award nominations in Best Revival of a Play and Best Actress in a Play for A Doll's House. The actress is a staunch feminist and has often addressed the issue of gender equality, racial equality and discrimination against women in Hollywood. With the aim of promoting diversity in cinema, she founded the production company Franke Films and is also an investor in the women's soccer team Angel City Football Club.
