Sophia Loren, pseudonym of Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone (Rome, 20 September 1934), is an Italian actress.

Considered one of the most famous Italian actresses in the history of cinema, Loren joined the Seventh Art at a very young age and quickly made a name for herself, in the early fifties, thanks to her roles in comedy films such as Pane, amore e... e... e in Hollywood-style films, such as A Husband for Cinzia and The Bay of Naples, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, but she also demonstrates great dramatic ability with the role in Black Orchid, thanks to which she won the Volpi Cup for best female performance. She was directed in 1960 by Vittorio De Sica in La ciociara, for which she won the Oscar, the second given to an actress in a non-English language film (the first was won by Anna Magnani in 1956 with The Tattooed Rose) . She was nominated again for the Oscar for best leading actress in 1965 for the film Italian Wedding and in 1991 she was awarded the honorary Oscar. Other films by her that have made the history of Italian cinema are A Particular Day and Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow. During her career she has been directed, among others, by Sidney Lumet, Charlie Chaplin, Martin Ritt, Carol Reed, George Cukor, Henry Hathaway, Robert Altman, Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola and Vittorio De Sica and has acted alongside to Marcello Mastroianni, Walter Matthau, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Clark Gable and other Hollywood stars. He has won numerous awards (both honorary and competitive), including two Oscar awards, five Golden Globe awards, a Golden Lion, a Grammy Award, a Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, a Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, a Lifetime Achievement Gold at the Berlin Film Festival, a BAFTA Award, ten David di Donatello Awards, three Nastri d'Argento Awards and was honored with a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Loren twenty-first among the greatest stars in film history. Among the 25 actresses in the ranking, Loren is the only one still alive.
