Jack Lemmon, born John Uhler Lemmon III (Newton, February 8, 1925 – Los Angeles, June 27, 2001), was an American actor. During his career he won two Oscars: for Mister Roberts' Crazy Ship (1956) and Saving the Tiger (1974), obtaining a total of eight nominations. He also won the major acting awards at the main European festivals: the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival with Americans (1992), the Silver Bear for best actor at the Berlin Film Festival for Tribute - Serata d'onore (1981) and the Prix d'interprétation at the Cannes Film Festival for Chinese Syndrome (1979) and Missing (1982). He is one of the very few actors (the others are Marcello Mastroianni and Dean Stockwell) to have obtained the Prix d'interprétation masculine at the Cannes Film Festival on two different occasions. Together with Walter Matthau he formed a fruitful artistic partnership for years which began with Not for money... but for money (1966), directed by Billy Wilder, and continued with The Odd Couple (1968), Front Page (1974), Buddy Buddy ( 1981) and later with Two Irresistible Grunts (1993), That's Amore - Two Improbable Seducers (1995), The Unrepentant (1997) and The Odd Couple II (1998). Furthermore, the two appeared, although in different scenes, in the dramas JFK (1991) and Love Stories (1995). In 1971, Lemmon made his directorial debut with A handsome widower, in need of affection, who also offers a babysitter, starring Walter Matthau himself.
