Sir Michael Caine, born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr. (London, 14 March 1933), is a British actor and film producer. Appearing in over one hundred films and active on the big screen since 1956, he is one of the best-known faces of modern British cinema, thanks to his versatility in leading and character roles: among his best-known performances, the one in the role of the English spy Harry Palmer from Ipcress (1965) to North by Northwest (1996), a "shadowy, silent secret agent [...] antithesis of the contemporary James Bond". He achieved international fame in the sixties with Alfie (1966) by Lewis Gilbert, and repeated his success in the following decade with films such as Carter (1971), The Man Who Would Be King (1975) and The Last Bridge (1978) . At a mature age, from the 1980s, he received the main awards of his career, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe for Rita, Rita, Rita (1983) and the first of two Oscars, thanks to the role of Elliot in Hannah and Her Sisters Woody Allen (1986). He received a second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing a doctor in The Cider House Rules (1999). He played Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne/Batman's butler in the Dark Knight trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. He has also appeared in other Nolan films: The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), in a voice cameo in Dunkirk (2017) and in Tenet (2020). Together with Jack Nicholson and Paul Newman, he is the only actor in history to have been nominated for Oscars for films produced in five decades: in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and two thousand. In 1992 Caine was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his contribution to the history of cinema. In 2000 he was knighted. For his stage name he was inspired by the title of the film The Caine Mutiny.
