A friend of mine has the same version of this sig. He got it in person in 1988. I am not sure when or why he changed his sig. But this was his sig back in the 80s.

I can't see why it wouldn't be real....not like He was a big time player.
I sent the card to Him in the mail about the time you mentioned 1988.
