Katharine Houghton Hepburn (Hartford, May 12, 1907 – Old Saybrook, June 29, 2003) was an American actress, winner of four Academy Awards. In her career, which spanned more than sixty years, she acted in a wide range of film genres, from screwball comedies to dramas. She received twelve nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress, winning four and becoming the person with the most wins in this category in history. In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her first among its greatest stars, deeming her the greatest film actress of all time. Raised in Connecticut, Katharine Hepburn began acting while studying at Bryn Mawr College. After four years in the theater, favorable reviews of her work on Broadway brought her to the attention of Hollywood. His early years in the world of cinema were marked by success and an Oscar for his third film, Morning Glory (1934), but he later starred in a series of films that failed to attract public attention, so much so that in 1938 it was labeled "box office poison". The actress herself was the architect of her own comeback, redeeming her contract with RKO Radio Pictures and buying the film rights to Scandal in Philadelphia: she sold them on the condition of playing the protagonist role and it consecrated her once again to Hollywood. In 1940 she was hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where she worked alongside Spencer Tracy, her film partner in nine films and secretly her partner in life off the set. In the second half of her career she appeared in Shakespearean theater productions and took on a variety of literary roles. She won three more Academy Awards for her performances in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968) and On Golden Pond (1981). In the 1970s she began appearing in television films, where she continued her career into old age. In 1976 she also won an Emmy Award, as best leading actress for Love in the Ruins, alongside Laurence Olivier. She left the stage in 1994, at the age of 87, after starring in Love Affair. After a period of inactivity and ill health, she died in 2003 at 96. In addition to those mentioned, her most famous films include: Fever of Living (1932), Little Women (1933), Susanna! (1938), Woman of the Day (1942), Adam's Rib (1949), The African Queen (1951), Him and Her (1952), Summer Time (1955), The Rain Wizard (1956) ), Suddenly Last Summer (1959), Long Journey Into Night (1962), The Madwoman of Chaillot (1969) and The Trojan Women (1971). In addition to the four Oscars (a record that remains unbeaten), Hepburn won two BAFTA awards, a NYFCC Award, a David di Donatello, a Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival and a prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
