Mariangela Melato



Mariangela Melato, born Mariangela Caterina Melato (Milan, 19 September 1941 – Rome, 11 January 2013), was an Italian actress. She began studying acting under the guidance of Esperia Sperani. After years of theater in which she worked with Fantasio Piccoli, Dario Fo, Luchino Visconti and Luca Ronconi, she made her film debut with Pupi Avati in the horror film Thomas e gli demoniati, also known as Thomas (Gli demoniati). Success came in the seventies, for the participation in successful dramatic films and comedies, especially for the artistic collaboration with Lina Wertmüller and Giancarlo Giannini in the grotesque comedies: Mimì metallurgico wounded in honor, Film of love and anarchy and Travolti from an unusual destiny in the blue sea of ​​August. It was in this period that she received most of her film awards, including four David di Donatello for best actress for The Policewoman (1974), Dear Michele (1976), The Cat (1977) and Help Me to Dream (1981) and others four special awards. She also won five Nastri d'Argento for best actress, two Golden Globes and a Golden Ciak. In the theater field you have won two Ubu awards (2002 and 2011) and two Eleonora Duse awards (1987, 1999) as best actress. She always alternated her work between cinema and theatre: she dedicated herself more to the latter in the second part of her career, reducing her participation in cinema and working occasionally for some television dramas. She fell ill with pancreatic cancer and died on January 11, 2013 at the age of 71.
