Vittorio Gassman, born Vittorio Gassmann (Genoa, 1 September 1922 - Rome, 29 June 2000), was an Italian actor, director, screenwriter, writer, voice actor and TV presenter, active in the theater, film and television fields. Nicknamed il Mattatore (from the homonymous TV show he conducted in 1959), he is considered one of the best and most representative Italian actors, remembered for his absolute professionalism (bordering on manic), for his versatility and for his magnetism. Artist with deep roots in the world of the most committed theater, he was founder and director of the Italian Art Theater. His long career in Italy and abroad includes major productions, as well as dozens of divertissements that gave him widespread popularity. With Alberto Sordi, Ugo Tognazzi and Nino Manfredi, Gassman is considered one of the greatest interpreters of the Italian comedy, a quartet to which Marcello Mastroianni and Monica Vitti are generally joined
