In around 1967, Marlon Brando waved down a Manhattan cab driver, Matty, who couldn't believe his favorite actor was going to be his fare. Knowing that every other driver would talk the entire trip, he just said hello to Brando, asked where to take him and kept quiet.

When they reached their destination, Brando asked how much. Matty said, no charge. He wanted to thank him for all the great movies and roles he was in.

Brando asked Matty for a paper and something to write with. Brando wrote:

"For Matty
With the greatest appreciato for your kind gesture
Best wishes always,
Marlon Brando"

Matty framed it and kept in his apartment until about 10 years ago, when he called me up to see about selling it. I asked what he wanted, he said he did some research and told me what he thought it was worth...which was pretty accurate. I loved it. I bought it. Typical me, though, it's been sitting in an envelope in my office ever since.

Great story and truly one of a kind item. I know you are honored that he would call you about such a remarkable piece.

Here is a cut autograph of Brando I got about a year ago.

Hi Steve,

Super story and signature! Love him (if a little old for the part) in Orpheus Descending - the film version...I can't recall the name. The Fugitive Kind. Anna Magnani...excellent film - and autograph!

Thanks, Bradford. I published the print magazine back then and he wanted to place a classified ad to sell it (he didn't use email or the web). I bought it for what he was going to list it for.

The Godfather and Apocolypse Now were my favorite Brando movies.

This is a cool story. Very modest behaviour of the cab driver- less is more! And he got a great dedicated signature. I can imagine that Marlon Brando remembered this from time to time....

Yeah, that's a keeper... even if it stays in an envelope.

It's a keeper but I'm thinking of selling it. The stuff just lays around in boxes. I haven't looked at it in years.

I'm going to sell it if I can get what I think it's worth. I'll post it in Buy/Sell/Trade tomorrow before I put it on eBay.
