Recently, I went to see Midge Ure kick off his North American tour with the only solo acoustic show of the run. You never heard of him—OK, leader of Ultravox? Thin Lizzy guitarist? Had some decent solo hits? No…well, ever heard the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” 6.175 million copies sold worldwide? Yeah—He wrote it. Produced it. Sang on it. Live Aid, Live 8, Live Earth? Dude made them happen. The Queen gave him an OBE. And this guy, who saved millions of lives and changed history, was stuck playing a freakin’ bar on Long Island. Damn.

Half the audience stayed afterwards, hoping to meet the man himself and snag some autographs—and he obliged every last one of us. Now I get to go through life with a signed copy of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” in my collection. This is a good thing.

Cool! I have that 45 of Do They Know It's Christmas, too.
