Vittorio Gassman, born Vittorio Gassmann (Genoa, 1 September 1922 – Rome, 29 June 2000), was an Italian actor, director, screenwriter, writer, voice actor and television presenter, active in the theatrical, cinematographic and television fields. Nicknamed the Mattatore (from the television show of the same name he hosted in 1959), he is considered one of the best and most representative Italian actors, remembered for his absolute professionalism (bordering on maniacal), his versatility and his magnetism. An artist with deep roots in the world of the most committed theatre, he was the founder and director of the Italian Art Theatre. His long career in Italy and abroad includes important productions, as well as dozens of divertissements which gave him widespread popularity. With Alberto Sordi, Ugo Tognazzi and Nino Manfredi, Gassman is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Italian comedy, a quartet to which Marcello Mastroianni and Monica Vitti are also generally associated
