Walter Matthau, stage name of Walter John Matthow (New York, October 1, 1920 – Santa Monica, July 1, 2000), was an American actor. In 1967 he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Not for Money... But for Money (1966). Subsequently he obtained two more nominations for A handsome widower, in need of affection, he also offers a babysitter (1972) and The irresistible boys (1975). Together with Jack Lemmon he formed a fruitful artistic partnership for years which began with Not for money... but for money (1966), directed by Billy Wilder, and continued with The Odd Couple (1968), Front Page (1974) and Buddy Buddy ( 1981), The Unrepentant (1997), Two Irresistible Grumpy (1993), That's Amore (1995) and The Odd Couple II (1998). Furthermore, the two appeared, although in different scenes, in the dramas JFK (1991) and Love Stories (1995). In 1971, Lemmon made his directorial debut with A handsome widower, in need of affection, who also offers a babysitter, starring Matthau himself.
