Francis Ford Coppola (Detroit, April 7, 1939) is an American director, screenwriter and film producer. He is considered one of the best directors in the history of cinema and, together with colleagues such as Steven Spielberg, Michael Cimino, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Brian De Palma, he contributed significantly to the birth of the New Hollywood, consecrating himself as a prestigious author thanks to making films such as The Godfather trilogy, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now and Bram Stoker's Dracula. He is one of ten filmmakers awarded both the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay along with Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, Paddy Chayefsky, Horton Foote, William Goldman, Robert Benton, Bo Goldman and the Coen brothers. Coppola triumphed in the first category in 1971 (along with Edmund H. North) thanks to Patton, General of Steel, and in the second in the 1973 and 1975 editions thanks to The Godfather and The Godfather - Part II (both alongside Mario Puzo). For the latter, he also obtained recognition as best director and the award for best film. In 2011 he was awarded his sixth statuette, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He has also won 6 Golden Globes, 3 David di Donatello, 2 Palme d'Or, 1 BAFTA award and received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 1992 edition of the Venice International Film Festival.
