Barbara Joan "Barbra" Streisand (New York, April 24, 1942) is an American singer, actress, composer, director and film producer. Considered among the most valid and prolific musical artists, over the course of her long career, which has lasted over sixty years, Streisand has become an icon in multiple fields of entertainment, winning numerous awards. She is among a select group of artists (called EGOT, after the awards' initials) who have won the industry's top four awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. With over 72.5 million albums sold in the United States and with a total of 145 million records sold worldwide, she is the best-selling female singer among the artists recognized by the Recording Industry Association of America (the only woman in the top ten and only artist outside the rock 'n' roll genre). After beginning her recording career in 1960, Streisand ventured into film at the end of the decade. She starred in the film Funny Girl, for which she won the Oscar for best actress (jointly with Katharine Hepburn) and the Golden Globe. Her other films include The Owl and the Pussycat, The Way We Were and A Star Is Born, for which she received the Oscar for Best Song and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. With the release of Yentl in 1983, Streisand became the first woman to write, produce, direct and star in a major studio film. The film won the Oscar for best soundtrack and the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film; Streisand received the Golden Globe for best director, the first woman to win that award
