About Me

What kind of member are you? (Check as many as apply.)
Collector
What would you like to tell us about yourself, your collecting, or business.
in the 1960s and 70s I mounted an effort to collect the signatures of the designers, photographers, letterers, and engravers of the first day covers in my US First Day Cover collection. Most of the people I contacted wrote back including Norman Rockwell (#1145 Boy Scouts and #1238 City Mail Service), Carter Brown, museum director of the U.S. National Gallery of Art (#1273 John Copley American Artist), Stephen Dohanos, chairman of the Postmaster General's Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee. Dohanos designed 40 United States postage stamps. I have signed covers of #1231, #1153, #1127, #1263, 1338A, #1320, #1293B, and #1132/1094. Paul E. Wenzel, the artist that drew the famous picture of Walt Disney used on the Walt Disney stamp (#1355) signed the Disney cover.
Included in the collection are autographed covers of important space stamps – Leonard Buckley (#1371 Earthrise), Paul Calle (#1331-1332 Space Walking Astronaut Gemini 4) and Robert J. Jones (#C69 8 cent - Honoring Dr. Robert H. Goddard).
The collection includes several world-famous photographers Yousuf Karsh (#1264 Eisenhower), Bernie Nobel (#1383 Eisenhower), and George Tames, the New York Times photographer that took the pensive picture of Eisenhower in 1953 only moments before the President went before television cameras to announce cessation of military hostilities in Korea (#1393).
The collection includes letters and background materials sent back by the signers. All of the covers are in the original envelopes used to return the signed cover.
I’d like to donate or sell the collection as a whole rather than break it up. I can send a sortable list of you'll contact e. Would you know of anyone interested in this kind of material?
