About Me

What kind of member are you? (Check as many as apply.)
Collector
What would you like to tell us about yourself, your collecting, or business.
I've been collecting books - mostly signed, first editons for almost 30 years. I also have a collection of signed First Day Postal covers. I used to also collect sports trading cards and have a signed collection including Negro League stars. I have an inventory of around 900 collectible and decided to finally create a catalog. I occasionally sell a few here and there online, but will pursue this more actively in the coming months. My present job keeps me busy with not enough quality time to be a more vigorous bookseller - but of course there are a number of books I'll keep in the family as heirlooms.
What is your level of expertise?
Long Time Lover
What are your areas of interest?
Sports, History/Politics, Books/Literature
Why do you collect?
It's been called 'a gentle madness' but here's a quote which pretty much captures my hobby:
"An autograph is almost a piece of an author - when I see an autograph it is like having a priceless piece of literary history to cherish." - Sir St. John Reynolds
What is your favorite autograph in your collection?
Hard to pick among a dozen or so. There's Bob Dylan, Nelson Mandela, Ted Williams, J.K. Rowling, J.M. Coetzee, Patrick O'Bryan, Joseph Mitchell, Murray Kempton, George Seldes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ralph Ellison, B.F. Skinner, Barack Obama - well, you get the idea. Some came with personal notes (collectible also) and very sentimental for this lifetime "pack rat" collector. It began as a child with baseball cards, comic books and other weird things like bottle caps.
You can ask anyone living or dead for their autograph. Who would it be?
Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain or Martin Luther King.
I omitted the word "books" in my first paragraph after I wrote: I have an inventory of around 900 collectible and decided to create a catalog." It read like I had 900 Negro League stars.
