I don't mind paying for an autograph from Players in any sport, but don't ask for insane prices....Don't forget who helped pay your salary your whole career (your fans)... With out fans you would never have received those insane salaries to begin with!! I agree with ball players trying to cash in on their own autographs, because let's face it there are a lot of people that ask for those autographs through mail or in person that are trying to cash in on them..I collect autographs for the fun of it and to give something to my kids, that they help collect with me something when i pass away...I will continue to collect autographs through the mail, but I will not pay $50.00 to david Cone for his autograph, maybe if you had 6 no hitters and was inducted in the Hall of Fame!!!
I really don't like players charging for autographs anymore. They make millions on the fans already at the ball parks and for gear so giving an autograhps should be an honor and a way to thank the fan for giving them these millions. As for someone inflating the prices of these autographs, simply don't buy from those people. If the athlete is signing at a show, they are there to bring in the buyers to the show and the promoter who will be charging a fee at the door and vendor fees should take care of those athletes. I live in a spring training town and try to go and get autographs before play starts. That seems to be the time the players are most relaxed and approchable and I keep most of my autographs or just give some to my nephews back east. Even than the athletes snub the fans and make them feel like they are beneeth them in some way and totally ignors them. Some are great and well mannored and have no problem signing like Mark Trumbo, Torii Hunter's the best and Trout, who I hope stays that way. Mattingly is great as well as Joe Torre. So yes, not all are bad but a lot are and shouldn't be. I'm a big BB fan and go to the games a lot less because the way the athlete treats the fan any more. When it comes to baseball, we're all kids weather we're 8 or 80 and I don't agree with Jim Roam on that one. Don't ever grow up. Never!
Some of the older players like Willie Mays I kind of understand charging a lot. He never made the big money and there was no union to help players like him. Plus he is a legend and probably the greatest living player. However newer players from the 90's on up I would not pay for. Most are wealthy beyond their means. Certainly they dont need the huge fee they ask. The great Joe D basically started this whole thing about charging for signing. I think he was asking 175.00 at his last show.
I agree with you Steve. Do you remember when the comish banned Mickey and Willie from baseball for making apperances for Resorts in Atlantic City? Baseball wasn't helping these greats and than they slapped them in the face.
Yes I surely do. I consider myself very lucky with those 2 greats. Got Mays for 60.00 at a show way back in the 90's and got Mantle a his restaurant twice for free. I must say both were unpleasnt gentlemen!
I don't mind if a player charges for a TTM, but I will not pay $50 because the guy played for the Mets/Yankees/Cubs, etc. Plenty of HOF guys only charge $5 or $10 a card. I guess its up to the player what they want to charge. Maybe they do that to keep people from sending TTM's??? I've been doing TTM's for about a month now, and the only thing I've paid for so far, is stamps. ;)
