I'd like people who join this little blog to discuss the amazing hippy musicians who convened on a little town called Laurel Canyon, in West Los Angeles, to play their music together. Let's use our words, pictures and autographs to better describe the music, the scene, the decadence, the alliances and the fallouts of the greatest gathering of talented musicians ever to assemble in one place during such a short period of time.
The music movement in Laurel Canyon was also a reaction to the social and political injustices that the musicians saw happening all around them.
These young, idealistic musicians thought they could change the world, specifically the socioeconomic and political status quo that they so eagerly tried to escape. The late 60's and early 70's were turbulent times, with a lot of political and social upheaval. The hippies in Laurel Canyon were reacting to what they saw happening, particularly the war in Vietnam. They wrote lots of protest songs; songs of hope, change, of coming together, stopping the war, hanging out and learning to love one another.
Let's discuss the club's these musicians played in, along side other soon-to-be greats, in order to hone their skills and create new alliances. The clubs were a 5 minute hitchhike south of Laurel Canyon: The Roxy, Whisky-A-Go-Go, Troubadour and more.
This should be an amazing adventure. Won't you join me?
I welcome all your creative input and your memories.
I bought this autograph of JD Souther for $43.00 plus international post.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THE-VERY-BEST-OF-J-D-SOUTHER-BORDER-TOWN-...
I googled JD Souther autographs and found nothing except one signed guitar.
That was after an extensive search. Of course, JD was a hit songwriter for The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt (who he had a fling with in Laurel Canyon).
JD knew pretty much everyone who was living in Laurel Canyon or playing The
Troubadour Night Club on Sunset Strip (5 minute drive from Laurel Canyon)
He never made it to the big time but he knew everyone, who came out of the canyon, that did.
I'm really proud of this Bonnie Raitt 8x10, black and white auto I just bought from
eBay for $125.00. It's a stunner:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BONNIE-RAITT-HAND-SIGNED-8x10-PHOTO-AWESOME...
It comes with a JSA authentication sticker.
I like it because Bonnie's pose is very natural and she looks great, the great quality
of the photograph itself really catches her spirit, her signature is clean, clear, bold
,not rushed, she spells out her full name and the flow is great.
I hope you can share your autographs of the great artists in Laurel Canyon on my
blog as well. I sure will!
I'm really proud of this Joni Mitchell autograph I purchased. She signed it in 1995 when coming out of the Ed Sullivan studios after appearing on the David Letterman
show. The picture of her was taken from a coffee table book. It is artist's rendering of her.
Here it is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Joni-Mitchell-IN-PERSON-Autograph-Photo-/32...
Joni of course was one of the "den mothers" of Laurel Canyon. She brought people together to form groups. It is said that Crosby, Stills and Nash sung together for the very first time in her living room of her home on Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon. She was a pivotal player during Laurel Canyon's heyday.
This is going back a ways, to my early days ( Hollywood ) after hours, 1967 - 1971. I can only remember the high lites...............Oh but what memories. Hollywood and the strip is where you went, late at night 12:00 til 05:00 in the a.m.. when there seems like there was nothing else to do. I could catch after hours action at Canter's on Fairfax, share coffee with the Buffalo Springfield members or the Mothers of Invention to name just a few. You mention the Troubadour, I saw to many to list, John Mayall ( with his blues from Laurel Canyon and room to move), Dave Mason, Santana even Hoyt Axton to name just a few. And yes, the Whiskey a Go Go was a world of it own. Most memorable there was the Doors. Thanks for the post information. It brings back memories.
Thanks for the great post Patrick. I loved it. It's so cool to meet someone who was actually there. I get all my information from talking with people that know a lot about it but were not there. I also read books and online articles about the scene.
Any other information you can provide about your experiences would be greatly appreciate.
I bought this Frank Zappa autograph for around 300 bucks from Roger Epperson. As you know Frank owned a log cabin in Laurel Canyon and it was the scene for free music jams, free food, free love, free nude swimming in his pool and free crashing on his floor.
