Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 20, 2012 at 12:13pm i like Derek Jeter, but he isn't the greatest shortstop ever. his autograph is in over abundance etc.. i think steiner is charging WAAAAAYYYY too much and you guys are paying astronomical prices for someone who signs quite a bit for them. i sweat there's over a million of his autographs that are out there (paid signings and just signing at the hotels/games).. i still have FIVE baseballs that are PSA DNA and look exactly like this that i can't sell for $225 ea. if new yorkers would stop baying what's essentially a very stupid price tag, it would lower what he charges steiner and then steienr would have to lower what they are charging... i mean, do you think that Rickey Henderson is more than 50% of the value of Derek? How about Cal Ripken? because those guys were signing for less than $200 at stiener recently for an 8x10.
Permalink Reply by CEE GEE on January 20, 2012 at 1:01pm I like your price point Mike...I payed for both of those great HOF Players last week for less then what one Jeter piece would cost from Steiner....but I think the reason Jeters auto is so much is BECAUSE of Steiner...they inflated his auto value insanely in the last 10 years...As nice as Andrews piece is in my opinion a Jeter auto in reality should be between 150 to 200 on any item...but its STEINER that made prices on Jeters items sky rocket...its insane the prices Steiner asks for Dereks auto...but its not the collectors fault that Steiner items have to be sold for so much money...Its Steiners fault...its almost impossible to sell a Steiner certified Jeter for any less...I still do not own any Jeter Steiner certified signed anything
Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 20, 2012 at 1:38pm steiner only charges what people are willing to pay. funny how people still et jeter for free though thinking that BECAUSE steiner charges so much, this should be worth just as much.
how come, at this point, has steiner NOT done team signed jerseys, lithos, bats, baseballs? they just won the WS a few years ago, and i think they had about every player under contract... why don't they have those? is it because the value of each individual is costing them way more per guy than they could ever hope to get on a team item?
Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 21, 2012 at 6:34am i guess i just missed it the ONE TIME i checked their site... their prices DISGUST ME, so i don't even bother... and you had to sign up just to look at the site, now i get a ton of spam mail from them.
Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 21, 2012 at 9:49am i understand that.. really, i do. but those prices are way too high for someone who is still alive and playing and still readily signing... i mean, how much can a ty cobb be had for? i know that steiner charges a lot... but it's kind of like a new car... as soon as it walks off the lot, it loses more than half it's value AND you've had it a while (presumably it's not brand new.) there's not going to be a lot of value in his autograph in years to come... this is why i don't collect sports for the most part. people like willie mays (who is arguably the greatest player ever) isn't going for that much, or nearly that much even. does anyone believe that jeter will STOP signing once he's done playing?
Permalink Reply by terrier8HOF on January 21, 2012 at 10:14am Are people REALLY paying that much for these? I see Munsons, Clemente's, Mantles etc on ebay (real ones) with insane buy it now price tags, and they are just sitting there. As for a Jeter ball for $649, I would rather spend that money on a Ted Williams Joe Cronin ball, and Joe Dimaggio ball, which combined I could get for what that one Jeter ball is "selling" (or should I say sitting) for. Or one clean, mint Mantle ball.

I think people have to feel safe posting legitimate things without being beaten up on. You're not talking about authenticity, you're talking about pricing. I think we need to set up some rules and draw lines about what should be discussed where. For instance, the pricing of private signings, whether by Steiner or another company, is a great topic—piece by piece or in general. But in the right place.
We don't serve collectors' needs when they are afraid to post because they think they'll get beaten up on. And Mike...you're sometimes really hard on posters.
I think it's time to start an etiquette and rules discussion. Going to ask someone to do that.
Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 21, 2012 at 12:03pm THIS IS NOT IN THE SELL FORUM!!! i find that to be OPEN for me to talk about anything then. i guess i'll stop posting altogether... that's that.. .this time, no kidding!
Permalink Reply by mike aring on January 21, 2012 at 12:20pm oh, and i do think that this pricing is just as criminal as anything else brought up in these forums... goodbye!
