Super Early Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Signatures

These were signed in the guest book of Oxford restaurant on valentines day 1966. Liz and Richard were in town for presentation of Doctor Faustus. Guest book also includes signatures of Sean Connery and Telly Savalas on different dates. No authentication so seeking your esteemed opinions.

This is not early - 1949 is early - but this is a nice Burton from that small image.

Thanks Eric. I did not mean to imply an early Richard Burton, nor an early Elizabeth Taylor, but an early Mr. and Mrs. Burton collectively. Although I suppose that one could argue 23 months as a married couple is not early.

The idea The Burton and Taylor met on the set of Cleopatra is a myth as I recall - I believe they met in the very early 1950's, '52 or '53, during Burton's first outing to Hollywood. Yes, very nice set as married couple, and she signed "Burton" as well. 1966 is the the year of Virginia Woolf - that is a key for them. I have seen many Burton's in red ink. Thanks for posting.

Eric, I appreciate this historical context. Thank you! I have also included the other signatures for your review and assessment. These are a couple of years later but in the same guest book. Thoughts?

Hi Dan,

You are welcome. Sorry, I don't know the other signatures.

What do you intend to do with those 2 sigs of Burton/Taylor? I have a superb signed color candid 8x10 of Burton, but have been a Woolf fan for ages.

I appreciate your expertise, Eric. I can't imagine someone forging these other ones given the circumstances. I intend to keep the piece but would welcome your thoughts on the current market for this type of mr and mrs burton piece. Widespread appeal?

Dan

Hi Dan, appeal...great names together, usually wanted on a photo etc. I appreciate this context of Faustsus (and the odd interview on YouTube about it with a very angry Elizabeth) and I like the proximity to Woolf. Market value I believe would be a few hundred, under but close perhaps to 5 or so, I imagine. I am not up on her current value as much. If this were a hotel guestbook in Gstaad it might be worth a bit more? I'd pay a bit more anyway. JoeW would be the one to ask about value. Checking results at RR and other closed auction would also yield some data. Also, is there a premium for "Taylor Burton".

I will have to check some sales on Sean Connery, as well as the Faustsus interview. Thanks for taking time to provide a thoughtful response to my inquiry, Eric.

Dan
