I posted 3 Buddy Rich signatures here for some inputs which all appear to be Legit or pretty good forgeries. I made a bid on the nicest sig and was accepted for 35GBP which is perfect. But right after I accepted and paid, I started getting that gut feeling that maybe this one is not Legit. So I emailed the seller saying that I'll have it sent to Roger Epperson because I want his LOA and if he had any reservations about it failing to please let me know now and we'll cancel the deal. Here is his reply...

Hi,

With reference to your statement re the autograph of Buddy Rich, it is completely authentic so I do think it's best we cancel the transaction with no hard feelings either way. I will ensure you receive a full refund via paypal.

All the best

A very strange response to a so-called Legit item. Here is the sig.

It could be Legit? But now I'm more unsure.

I like the signature.

As far as the response from the seller maybe he just wants to avoid any and all conflict.

I assume he's confident he will sell it & wants to part as "friends" with you

Not everyone gets their dander up or spoils for a fight when something goes a bit sideways

IMO

You could be right Don.

I wonder how he would react if I bid again haha (probably pushing my luck hehe).

This situation actually suits me fine because I found a much much better BR item which I'll try to get.

he probably blocked u .I do with all canceled sales .its not worth the headache especialy for for 35$ and the seller is responsible for return shipping it becomes cost prohibited.

I have all my buyer ask every question up front.i would rather not sell to u than have a headache .ebay penalizes seller for canceled auctions or returned itiems now also.

I definitely understand your point john

I usually do ask questions in advance

I studied the 3 sigs for about a week and felt confident each was Legit. But as soon as I commited myself, I got that strange pang in my gut. It's actually the first time this has happened. I don't feel any shame in post replying to him. After all, it is my money and I can say or do whatever the heck I want. It was a bit of a learning experience, but mostly it was just an experience.

No biggy

PS... Now you made me curious if he blocked me. Maybe I'll send him a message to find out hehe

PS2...I didn't know about the sellers penalties. That kinda sucks

I've found that people get very defensive when you question their stuff, even if its a professional. I know a guy who makes millions running a big auction house. Like I actually know the guy and his stuff is legit 99% of the time. I won something of his that was good, but I took it a step further and did some additional, (what I felt was cool) research, to further prove it was real. He had no interest in seeing it. Almost as if my additional research meant that I doubted him.

Some people just have too much an an ego with this stuff. This guy canceled you because you dared question him. Best to walk away.

You do have a good point James.

What made me feel uncertain about this BR sig was the big loop in the "R". It's not a trait I'm used to seeing. The rest of the sig matches quite well and this is a nice clean good ink sig.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Although I still find his reaction a bit odd.

What I find most odd is how cheap BR sigs are. Pretty much the undisputed world champion of the drum kit can be had for well under $100. Amazing !!!

what about art blakey?

what about him?

not sure what you're getting at???

EQUALLY GOOD?

I respectfully disagree

Art definitely makes any top 10 or 15 world's best drummer list but Buddy is and will always be the reigning champion. He did so much more than any others. Even Gene Krupa is noted as saying that Buddy is the best.

It might be safer to say that some can do what Buddy did but NOBODY ever surpassed his talents

He is one of those people that is classified w/ LEGEND status

Makes good sense, u have convinced me and well said.  Maybe Blakey was only a top 10 drummer,,but  # 1 at providing such a great mentorship for the many greats who passed thru his band.

I am biased thought cause I grew up with art blakey's son in Vermont of all places.

I can certainly see how that could make a person biased.

It would be nice if more modern drummers studied the oldies. It would certainly improve today's musical talents.

Carl Palmer's first influence was Gene Krupa until he met and trained w/ Buddy at age 13. Then he became a huge Buddy fan as well and realized just how good Buddy was.

All those old guys were awesome.
