Please forgive my ignorance if there is a simple answer. Why does PMG (1905- 1907) George B. Cortelyou's name appear Under Secretary of the Navy*(or) US Attorney General*Charles Joseph Bonaparte's signature?  what I could imagine was a correspondence letter. THANK YOU

Borrowed stationary?

maby the letter was written to George. I have a Nixon letter somewhere and under his signature and to the left is the name and address of the person he wrote to

Hi Jason, That close?

I think Jason might be correct.

not as close as the one you posted. the address at the lower corner is 1 inch away from Sincerely and a half inch away from the signature

This is a poster child for the unfortunate practice of making "cuts". Context, meaning - all gone/unavailable

I have cut signatures from the 1900s and I never understood why they would cut out the signature from a hand crafted note or typed letter. I'd imagine it would be a lot more meaningful to read their letters and keep the autograph as a complete piece.

Meaningful and thus valuable. It is a practice that continues to this day - sad to say.

Bonaparte is writer and cortelyou is recpient
