Freddie Mercury value to go up soon
Here's something interesting I thought I'd share with you all. Some of you might have heard that the remaining members of Queen are making a Freddie Mercury biopic coming to theaters at the end of the year. This movie has been in the making for many years now and most queen fans assumed it would never actually leave the ground. But here it is. In discussing it with a few friends in the field both online and off, I have to agree the movie will provide new exposure to brand new fans and as someone else has so brilliantly put it: more exposure means new fans, new fans means higher demand, higher demand means higher value. I have to say I agree. This is actually something those of us in the queen collecting circle have been noticing over the last few months. Freddie's value has been growing recently and the movie isn't even out yet. For example, last year the going rate for a signed freddie on plain paper was about $400. Today, they are averaging about $550-$600 on plain paper. Last year, a fully signed album was worth about $1,200. Today they are averaging about $1,800/1,900 and growing quickly. Ive been collecting queen for about 40 years (yikes) and I can tell you this is not the same as usual yearly value growth. It's happening much quicker. Genuine Freddie autographs are spending less and less time sitting on sale. Last year it was common to see a freddie signed item for sale for a few days before it was scooped up. These days, we are seeing them being purchased within hours of being offered. Just a heads up for those of you interested in freddie signed items: now is the time to buy (safely). These autographs will be a great investment soon. Who knows how high the value will go this time next year.

Innuendo you mentioned making a Queen study guide here in the past. Do you have the link to it? You're kind of a queen encyclopedia. Just curious about those in Freddie's life. Does his husbands signature hold any value to fans? I thought about getting a signed book that was up on Ebay from Hutton but I didnt act fast enough and missed out. I also had no idea what to pay for it.

Steve and I had talked about me putting out the study guide last year but my draft hit the skids when the photos stopped uploading. I do believe I'll give it another try now that I'm retired I have more time to sit down and type it out. It's a ton of material to cover so itll take some time. The bands hands changed quite a bit over the years.
As for Jim Hutton, no, his signature is never going to be worth much nor has it gained much over the years in value. He did pass away in 2010 of lung cancer, and his estate was sold off at that point. Items he owned from freddie were worth a good amount but his signature itself still isn't. My wife and I got him to sign 2 copies of his book and I gotta say he was a real sweet guy. A signed hardcover of his book would probably be worth about $75 to $125. Most of that price is the book itself.
For me, the only Jim Hutton related item I'd drop major cash for would be this great piece. A little note from Freddie to Jim. I believe Pete Wescombe owns it still. This was done around 1989 or 90. Freddie was close to the end and this little note makes one feel like he finally found happiness. It's a nice thought considering what he was facing at the time.

That is a nice thought. The Hutton book I saw on Ebay wasn't even hardcover so I might I been able to grab it for even less. The study guide is a great idea and would help people but you just know jack@ss fakers would be studying too

Absolutely. Forgers are always looking for info. I always watch what I say on public forums when giving advice. For every fact about a signature I leave, theres 3 or 4 more details I keep to myself for just that reason. Forgers have even tried fooling people with little notes like the one I posted above. They have tried copying certain phrases from multiple letters and it never works. I guess theres another upside to having studied queen this long- I can sniff out a forged letter like a truffle pig. I've seen all the real letters, so when they try to pull that crap, it's a fail.
It's a double edged sword. You want to give people enough information to spot fakes but not too much to allow forgers to perfect anything.

Hell, even I'm shocked! That's big cash. When freddie died, the only things bringing in that kind of money were lyrics. And all the lyrics are owned now. I'd be afraid to know what they fetch today. A lyric filled notebook was sold a few years ago and that was big money too. But Fred's going up...if you want lyrics today, you better trade in the ol' car! Sheesh!
And to any forgers reading this: I know where all the lyrics are and who owns them. Dont even bother.

Man I got burned on a Freddie Mercury autograph in like 2002. I wish I knew where you were when I was about to buy that piece.
Dude I'm going to try and dig it out and find it cuz I know I still have it. I will post a picture up so you can laugh at me hahah
