Hi I'm new here and just recently acquired a book from ebay possibly with Nelson Mandela's signature in it signed with felt tip marker. It's called Madiba: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela A Celebration. It's a look through of his life and the inscription inside says it was presented during a De Beers golf tournament in 1999 to support his Children's fund. However I couldn't find much about this book or the event online. I also read here that ebay and abebooks has sold forged books before. I was wondering if any of you could help me authenticate this or who I should go to. I'm willing to spend some on appraising it. Just don't know where to start. Let me know if i need more pics or info.

Thanks for your time!

good to know about some fake stuff on Abebooks

some good information coming forward

I'd ask Markus Brandes. Look up his page here and put a comment on it with a link, asking if he'd be kind enough to give his opinion.

Will do thanks Steve!

Thank you for your message.

I personally collect Nobel Peace Laureates particular Albert Schweitzer, Nelson Mandela and Dalai Lama. To be honest the signature looks questionable for me although a final judgement is difficult based on the computer scan. For me it looks as there is a signature below and maybe overwritten. I would appreciate to see a extra large scan of the "n" or review the original item for a final judgement. As mentioned here before the signature is very slow and shaky which would be enough that we would not be able to stand behind authenticity.

There are many autographs of Mandela in this style particular offered from England and personally obtained items are looking often slightly different. I do not have any doubts regarding the authenticity of the second item.

I would recommend Nelson Mandela collectors particular going for dates examples and be very careful.

Please find enclose 2 examples from 1998& 1999 which had been personally obtained for your references.

kind regards

Markus

marcus,

Here is a video of a liveaid concert program with possible Mandela signature. If you look at the cover,  there is a green illustration of Africa, and someone signed in Green ink within the green African illustration (see 8;15 minutes into video.). Is the signature of Nelson? Could the signature be hidden, in green on green, to get it out of prison?

Thank you for your response Markus! I was worried about the shakiness too. Is this a better picture?

Thank you, Markus.

Greetings, without being too arrogant nobody knows more about Mandelas signature than me, this is not a \n autopen but an outright forgery

Thank you for your input! I'm new at all this so looks like I got duped. Lesson learned. Hopefully someday I'll get my hands on a real Mandela.

great send me a photo before you buy anything do not get caught out

Will do!
