The signature style has the traits I look for in an authentic John Wayne. What concerns me a bit is the ink itself. What type of ink is it?

Not sure what ink it is but could be an early biro . There are others in the book with the same kind of ink and some are in pencil

The book is dated 1949 but this could be a little later.

Early ball point written hard on soft paper/surface can result in this appearance of slight hesitation and some form oddities.

That will help to see those examples. Like I stated earlier, the Wayne signature look fine as long as it's live ink. It appears it is taped to the page. You should be able to see impressions on the back of the page if it was signed by an ink pen.
