John Lennon signature
Hello All! I purchased the attached small John Lennon signature from Tracks a few years ago. It was partly as a test to see whether I could make money on an autograph - I’ve always had my doubts about whether it’s really easy (possible) to make money in this game or not. I purchased it from Tracks in order to be pretty confident of its authenticity as I didn’t want that discussion with anyone later on when I tried to sell it on, but of course I paid a premium (I think) because of that. I recently tried to get a value on it from RR Auction, however they told me that it’s not ‘nice’ enough for them to even consider!
Interested on anyone’s thoughts as to whether this was a good investment or not! (I’m bracing myself for the feedback). If it’s not worth much now then I’ll just hang onto it and try again in say 10 years time ...

As you say it is a genuine John Lennon autograph. Actually signed at a time (1966) when it was hard to gain access to The Beatles let alone get an autograph. Unfortunately it has not been looked after by the original owner. The condition does factor in the pricing of such and item. The real test is what someone is prepared to pay for it. Only the market can decide that.

There are avid Collectors at all levels....someone would definitely buy this...but you’d probably not make any money on it....anyway it’s a decent 66 John, no one in the 60’s thought autographs of the Beatles would be worth thousands 50 years from then. All the very best with it Ralph.

There are several critical factors which determines value. Perhaps the main one is authenticity. Another is condition (which has many sub-factors involved).
Your signature, while legit, is just too beat up. Because the flaws are so enormous, there would be a substantial discount to any buyer.
On the plus side, having that Tracks provenance is critical and, as Beatleworld said, should pretty much guarantee you a buyer.
Selling "as is" won't make you rich - but you'll probably break even. Perhaps look around for other individual signatures in similar or better condition, then bundle them together. Or, consider professionally restoring the one you own.

For the most part, my experience has been that not very many John Lennon autographs come cheap. I’m one of those crazy collectors that looks at a piece like this and thinks...yes, it has its flaws, but it has a certain amount of “character” to it as well. Another plus for this autograph is that it is bold, and for me, that’s one of the most important aspects to any autograph.
I would rather have this autograph in its present state than the same autograph, relatively faded, yet on a clean piece of paper with no tape residue. For me, boldness is more important than the overall condition of the item on which the autograph is signed. In other words, boldness > cleanliness in my opinion.

On the date mentioned, the Beatles were at EMI studios recording Taxman....the more you can add to the story the better...people love a good story and its always a nice bonus.
