Have you ever bought a fake autograph?

Hi there,

I recently broke all the rules namely, if its too good to be true it probably is, don't pay for anything until its been verified and if your not sure ask here for an opinion from people who are more experienced and less likely to be hoodwinked! I bought a Prince (more I think about the more stupid I feel) and a fully signed Van Halen cd, both at a silly price...and both fake, my friend had recently bought a good Bowie signature from same seller so I presumed these would also be good.

Its a horrible feeling and was wondering if anyone else has else has mistakenly bought a fake and who was it and how much did they pay, honestly It will make me feel better!

there are many people who sell items where you could think it's to good to be true but than they have no knowledge about what they are selling ''so that's the other way''. but buying something and thinking this can't be real is fooling yourself. every person in this'' hobby or professional '' will have a bad moment in collecting.

Yes I had a great "don't know what they are selling..." but then you think it can happen again but bargains are the exception and the lengths and lies a fake seller/crook will go to is breathtaking. Hopefully its the best way to learn and I will not let it happen again... I hope.

Been there and done that!!! Everyone probably has gone thru this experience once in their life. Learn from it and move on with the knowledge. Hopefully it is not an expensive lesson.

€300 for a signed Prince and fully signed Van Halen.... a printed signature of those is probably more expensive than that... I was so exited I didn't sleep all night!

Yes, I have. WE ALL have. Aside from all the usual things people say in regards to buying an autograph and knowing if it's real (too good to be true, etc), here's something to think about. We live in a day and age where, EVERYONE knows what they have. It's not like in 1973 where some old person maybe passed away, and their kids have their antiques or collection, and might not know what they had, and sell it at insanely low prices. We live in a day and age where EVERYONE thinks EVERYTHING is valuable. So...if they have something they acquired from a family member, that "is signed by the John F. Kennedy and Jackie in 1958" guess what they'll do? They will Google, and they'll find out what it's worth. They WILL NOT put it on a table at a garage sale. Now, that doesn't mean you won't occasionally get a steal at an estate sale or some such place, but it's a lot less likely than it ever was.
