Hitchcock Signed Letter - Real Letter...but Real Signature?

Here's a TLS from Alfred Hitchcock to a lady who was a film preservation specialist at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).  He's asking for copies of his films to be used in a retrospective of his work to be hosted by the American Film Institute.  The lady who he is writing to died recently and this letter came from her estate.

I apologize that photos are dark. I was wondering how the signature looks. It's from 1973 and on his letterhead. I don't know if he used a secretary to sign this kind of correspondence or not. There are no typist notations on the bottom left...but I would not imagine he typed it himself.

I would definitely enjoy hearing from members regarding if this signature looks secretarial or from his hand.

Anybody have thoughts on this signed Hitchcock letter?  Was this kind of correspondence usually signed by him or a proxy? Thanks!

That's Hitchcock for sure.

Not sure - could be secretarial

Thanks Steve and Mupplvr.  Interesting....have you seen examples of secretarial Hitchcock?  The thing that gives me some pause is that sharp downward stroke connection between the first and last name.  Most examples have seen have an easier flow....if that makes sense.

Etienne, I agree with Mr. Cyrkin, in my humble opinion this is real. This letter has content and would have been important to Hitchcock. I submit an exemplar of mine that has a very rushed Jimmy Stewart and Hitchcock, that shows THIS characteristic "A" in Alfred.

Thanks, David....that's a great signature combination!  Again, the only reservation I have is the distance between his first and last name and the sharp downward stoke separating them.  On that point, yours is a very good example....it's almost a run on with the "H".

Etienne, For the money involved in buying a Hitchcock or Abbot and Costello today I understand you wanting to pick them apart. Sorry, I am bored with both, so I will no longer reply to either anymore. I will part with my Steve McQueen story. I spent 25 years trying to buy a Steve McQueen autograph, and after studying known examples for that same time, I purchased a restaurant cheque that he signed. My thoughts were he would probably sign for a person that waited on him over many years at one of his favorite restaurants. My having worked restaurants in my life recognized the food or grease stains that show up on the cheques thru the ordering , and cooking and paying for the meal process. I also was able to talk to Martin Landau who was a best friend of McQueens, who was able to verify and confirm the restaurant and McQueens lunch order, "burger no bun and a beer", which Landau witnessed many a time with McQueen…..A 67 year old friend of mine , who tried to get McQueens signature back in the day was told by McQueen, "you know I don't sign autographs", but shook her hand and chatted her up as they walked down the street. In the last few weeks she has dropped off replying to emails and I suspect she has China flu. She was one of the best in person collectors in LA. All the best to what ever you decide.

Thank you, David. I have appreciated your past studied input. I certainly do hope that you have not perceived that I have felt that you personally have had an obligation to reply to anything that I have posted as I seek the wisdom of others.

More importantly, and with all due respect, I don't believe it is appropriate on a public board to refer to the current pandemic with what has become a political and dismissive term. I lost a dear friend to the virus this past year and am extremely offended when I hear that loaded term used. Others reading this may have also suffered loss due to the virus - possibly of health, way of life, or, most tragically even life itself.

Again, as always, thanks.

Etienne, No obligation at all, just trying to help with an opinion. The ultimate decision down the road is yours. I feel sorry that you feel offended by my free speech, that  I was concerned with the possibility that a friend of mine might have contacted China or Coronavirus, or whatever term you see fit and might have passed. I am sorry that some one you cared for died from whatever, you want to call it . This is America. " Live Free Or Die"…..your free speech or my free speech…..all the same.

The official name for the disease was deliberately chosen by the WHO to avoid ethnic stigmatization. The other is a racist term that has endangered Asian- Americans who are not to be blamed for the outbreak.

Etienne, Any chance you can course the China virus not from China? The WHO  who sucked up to the Chinese for many months, finally accepted it came from China. Asian Americans are not in any danger from the truth from the country of origin. Another spin by the uneducated.

Etienne, David—No politics here please. Autograph Live is about autographs and memorabilia.
