Adding Chevy Chase to my 45ish Year Old SNL Vinyl Jacket with Belushi, Radner etc...

Just wondering everyones thoughts on adding Chevy to this vintage item. I asked this previously about a mail-in event and decided it was way too risky to get it done by mail. I have an opportunity to meet Chevy in person next month for about $200 I could get my item signed at his table. I really want to get this done, probably cover up Murray's signature with a sticky note with an arrow pointing to the area for Chevy to sign. (Trying to bypass any potential animosity with Murray signing so close to Chevy's picture)

If I do decide to get this done, what would be the best pen to use to try and match the others? Any other tips would be very welcome. Ill need to purchase tickets by tomorrow to save a little money. Hoping I can make my decision before then.

Here's the item again

" If you do it in a regular black Sharpie, it will stand out too much."

He should want it to stand out. Trying to make it look aged when it's not, doesn't make much sense. Try and get the best looking signature that you can.

I see what you mean, but im just not convinced. Im not saying you're wrong though and I really appreciate the response. Ive been pondering this so much and here's what I'm thinking..

Would a marker with a 1 inch tip possibly give the best possible signature? Maybe but that would look ridiculous on this jacket. To some, autographs are a work of art. Thickness, color and placement of the signature are usually decided by the items design and what works best as a whole. Since the other autographs are part of this item already, it makes it part of the deciding factor.

However, there may be a comedic factor in having Chevy stand out so much. They way he believed he was the funniest member, known for being a huge jerk, it may be fitting for a large bold autograph overshadowing the others. For now im torn. Next time I run out to shop, ill be picking up a sharpie pen, an extra fine and an ultra fine sharpie to test compared with a regular sharpie on an old jacket and see what they look like next to the other signatures. I still plan to run to dick blick on the weekend just to make sure there arnt any better options as well.

From what ive seen from marker review videos, Extra or ultra, one of those 2 seem to be the best way to go for now. We will see though. Thanks again for the help

I understand your concern about it being a "vintage" piece and adding a signature decades and decades later. But it doesn't work that way in this hobby. For example -- let's say you John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the Magical Mystery Tour album, and it was signed in the '60s. And you have the opportunity to get Ringo on it next week (well, he doesn't sign autographs so that's a bad example) you do it!!! Sure, experts will know that it's not a vintage Ringo signature (as he signs different, using a Star symbol for his last name), but so what. You added another Beatle to it. You're completing the original cast record. And the Bill Murray signature is icing on the cake because he joined in the second season, and is very difficult to get (as like Ringo, he doesn't sign). Now, where you'd have a legitimate question about adding signatures, is if you were going to meet Will Ferrell somewhere (who is also a difficult signer, but hey, I'm sticking with the examples I'm throwing out there). Someone could argue -- he isn't on that album. He wasn't in the cast of SNL until decades later, etc (to which I would say, get as many SNL cast members as you can, but have them sign the cover of it). Which leads me to another complaint. I hate when bands sign albums on the back. Sign the friggin' cover!!!! I don't care where the "credits" are of the bandmembers, or the smaller photos. I want the cover signed!!!! (that is all for now)

You are right 100% and really glad ive decided to get it done now. Thanks for explaining it this way. Im actually glad they signed the back of this jacket. I usually feel the same way and have a few other jackets signed on the back that bother me, but this one doesn't.

I stopped by Walmart and picked up every type of sharpie they had. Turns out, extra fine has been discontinued. I grabbed an ultra, sharpie pen, and a couple sharpie s-gels.. I wont be using the gel because they are water based and not listed as permanent but was still curious. The sharpie pen is similar to the ultra fine but seems a bit lighter in color. I believe the marker to beat is the ultra fine. I wish there was another option between the ultra and regular fine sharpies. Still planning on testing a bunch of other markers at dick blick over the weekend but just keeping this thread updated if anyone out there is curious

If anyone has a recommendation of another brand marker thats trusted and falls between fine and ultra fine, please let me know

Maybe I should do some kind of writeup on inks after my experience. I was being steered towards staedtler markers from others over the web but have found an archival pen thats a bit more intriguing with many different sized tips. The Sakura brand. Im hoping to find and test the micron 08 and the graphic 1 very soon. If anyone has experience with these, let me know please. Here are examples I found on reddit

I tested the Sakura pigma micron and graphic 1 and they are beautiful pens. It would be a great choice on regular paper or matte photos. When testing on an LP jacket, the ink lays down nice, no bubbles, but it just wouldn't dry. After 5 minutes, I was able to wipe away the signature with my finger easily. I continued to try a few other "archival" markers and had the same problem. If there is just a slight amount of gloss, its not going to work. Going to test the staedtler markers next but after seeing some reviews signed on trading cards with different levels of gloss, im expecting the same results.

The sharpie is dry to the touch instantly and I wouldnt have to worry about any smudges at a fast paced convention. On items with even just a slight gloss, sharpie still wins. For now the decision is still between a regular fine tip sharpie vs the ultra fine. Still hoping to find something inbetween those 2 thicknesses that is permanent, drys fast and is fade resistant.

Tested a bunch of archival markers that were fade resistant. Left untouched to dry on an old vinyl jacket. Came back to check after 24 hours. It seemed good at first. Completely dry and slight touches did nothing, but after a little more pressure with my finger, they all rubbed off easily. Any type of gloss, even slight makes these types of markers a bad option.

I still need to try a staedtler since they have a marker inbetween the sharpies fine and ultra fine versions, but I just picked up a fresh sharpie with dual writing ends, one of each end (fine and ultra fine), and the tip on the fine side is actually slightly thinner than the other fine sharpies I tested at home. Maybe because this one is new and more stiff? If i can't find a better option after 1 more day of testing,  im going with the fine side of my brand new dual tip sharpie. Chevy is going to stand out with fresh black ink no matter what I pick. I do not want the signature to be too thin. A gold sharpie may be a good option as well but I'd rather his signature be in black and stand out for this item rather than being signed in another color.

This is all good information as I was always curious about the archival pens (which are water based). For options such as matte photos or items like art prints, anything without gloss, I would use these archival markers in a heartbeat. Some of these markers are a very intense black that look awesome over white paper, but anything with the slightest bit of gloss, alcohol based markers seem to be the way to go.

Chevy chase canceled at the last minute. I was all set to leave tonight for the 4 hour drive. Not happening now and I bet no refund either fo the fan expo ticket ($48). They would have never contacted me about it either. Could have wasted even more in gas if I didn't try to double check his schedule.

Total bummer. All that planning and he cancels at the 11th hour.

They would DEFINTELY give you a refund. Trust me on that.

Especially if they argued it, and you showed the item, and explained that was the ONLY person you were there to get.

No deal. Ive messaged back and forth and they are not budging, says its their policy..
